I typically use A Or S but once in a while will switch to Auto or Scenic for a second opinion. šŸ˜‰

I have the same d600 with the same lens, I love it . will try to attach some pics !! just took these as examples. the box was at about 22 ft at 300mm and again at about 4 ft at 28mm, the globe was at about 5 ft for both at 28 and 300mm. the 22 ft shot of the box at 400 iso 1/25 sec handheld, all were at 400 iso and handheld, Hope this helps !!

Thanks. I find that this lens is good at close in shots like this. What I am still a bit disappointed in is this lens is pretty soft at shooting anything beyond 25 yards out at 300mm. It is just not as crisp as my 70-300mm FX I had previously. But I am going to keep at it. We are going on two trips this year and I decided to get this lens as my one size fits all rather than carrying multiple lens. I will bring my little nifty 50mm 1.8 D along as well and may end up using it a lot if this one gets too heavy.

Not the sharpest lens in test reports, however so many people on this forum use and like this lens that I have to conclude you got a bad copy. Maybe it was dropped. Who knows?

I am glad to hear that most others seem happy. Those who are not happy are probably doing what I did and compared it to a very sharp lens. As you say it is not the sharpest lens and I may be over reacting a bit. I am probably spoiled with my other lenses. I will keep using it and am learning a few nuances about it that is helping me get somewhat better results already.

Perhaps because you bought a full frame and are spending money for an FX that you are using as a DX. Just a thought.

Hi Jeff,

Not sure if your comment was for me, however I am using this FX lens on an FX D600 Camera in FX mode.

Look up "Lens Align" and look at the videos. Maybe you could post a shot so we could all see what you are referring too. Is the entire shot soft or are there points either in front or in back of the focus point that are sharp.

After reviewing a few more of my photos I donā€™t think itā€™s a focussing problem. Seems all areas are just a bit mushy. I think itā€™s just that the photos Iā€™m getting from this lens are a lot softer than I was hoping for. I am able to sharpen them up some in PS. I will find a couple of comparison photos using my 70-300mm FX vs the 28-300mm FX. Thanks again.

Did you do a "Fine Tune" with that lens?

No but I will. Thanks! Sometimes we ignore the obvious.

A friend has the FX 28-300mm that he uses continuously on his DX D7100. He bought it brand new. There is at least one individual on this forum, who has no praise for the 28-300mm. However, many on this forum feel otherwise. Including my friend. I'm believing that buying your lens used, became your problem, from the previously owner. I'm sure this very rarely happens. But you may have purchased a Lemon.

I may be wrong but I think comparing the results of this lens on a DX camera to a FX is comparing apples and oranges. On a DX you are in cropped mode so are getting results from the ā€œbestā€ part of the lens. No vignettes and less distortion.

Iā€™ve been using the 28-300 FX on a Nikon Df for over two years with amazing results. Me lens is sharp with fast focusing, great color rendition and excellent image quality... even extended to 300mm. Iā€™ve seen no vignetting at wide angle shooting. The only downsides are itā€™s weight, which is a little heavy for carrying around all day, and lens creep when I carry the camera face-down. But overall the 28-300 is a very versatile all-purpose lens for a wide range of shooting situations from street photography, portraits and landscapes to shooting birds and airplanes. Given the lensā€™ flexibility, itā€™s a very good value for the money. Have you downloaded the latest firmware update for your D600 to eliminate vignetting?
Iā€™ve been using the 28-300 FX on a Nikon Df for ov... (show quote)

Good to hear. No I have not checked my firmware updates lately so will do that as well. Thanks for the info!

Something's wrong-have it checked. I have the same lens and I love it!

What camera are you using. FX or DX? Did you find it took a while to get better results as you figured out the nuances of this lens? I just find it more unforgiving than my other lenses and the proper combination of speed, ISO and F stop is more limited. I am sure I will get better results as I figure these combinations out.

I bought a used Nikon 18-300 5.6 a few years ago and have been disappointed in the sharpness of the pictures when cropped. I am now going through the Nikon AF fine tune process trying to make pictures look sharper. Initial results seem to show a back focus problem. The process to check is not that easy, but better than the price to send to Nikon to do it. my camera is a D500.

Please expand on the ā€œNikon AF fine tune processā€ you are doing.

Sell it to someone like me that LOVES his. I get NO vignetting at wide angle and beautiful shots at telephoto. It is at least as sharp as my 18-200 and that lens is also sharp. And, I don't know what reviews you are looking at, but the ones I see are favorable. (B&H photo reviews with photo's) Sorry to hear your getting less than stellar images.

PhotographyLife.com-reviews-lens reviews. They list most of the Nikon lens and this one is 3.1 which is one of the lowest on the list. I knew this going in so canā€™t say I wasnā€™t warned...however like I said before I had used a friends last year and it seemed pretty decent and very versatile. I think my problem is I am now comparing it to my 16-35mm which gets reviews like ā€œone of the sharpest wide angles out there ā€œ. Also my 70-300 is sharper at the 200-300 Range.

My opinion is that lens is soft all over. Bought it to go with my D 750, very disappointed. Sold it for primes. When you read others who say it is a great lens, just look at some photos submitted. It all depends on what you consider to be a very good pic. My eye was too demanding to accept the limitations of that lens.

Agree...I am comparing it to my 16-35mm and my 70-300mm lens which are much sharper. I am slowly learning itā€™s limitations and am getting some better results by shooting at higher f stops.

I have the identical lens and have no problems with sharpness at the long range. Are you using a lens hood? The vignetting at the 28 mm end could be the lens hood encroaching into the image.

No lens hood. It usually gets corrected in LR post processing but is far worse than my 16-35mm. Worst at f3.5 but almost none at 9 or above.
