I really love that dark almost ink black shadow shadow effect you mostly see in portrait and full body shots, what kind of lighting and editing techniques are used to create this?

This is my first posting so Ill just jump in. I am an amateur compared to most of you guys, so bear with me. Im really interested in learning some new lighting techniques, especially portrait lighting. I really lean more toward doing black and whites, I feel it tells more of story about a subject. So I™m open to any and all advice. I got this shot off at the bird sanctuary in St. Louis last sat using a D3S.. be brutal, I can take it ;)
