Fast shutter! Not easy to freeze hummingbirds. Everything else right on, too.

John (and Lee, above) --- nah. The "stories" are sufficiently well known (at least by the locals, and nobody else who'd give a tinker's damn) to know that they're actually pretty bland. Ok, there was that axe murder that squeaked past due to some procedurally tainted evidence, and my buddy/ex-coworker Jay who owned the diner and died but owed taxes, and that hawt! floozy who liked to be called 'Nanette' (but whose real name was Mavis, though not every whistle-stoppin' Tom, Dick or Harry knew that) who hopped on the last Denver & Rio Grand Railroad train that stopped just the other side of these derelicts, the last time it stopped in scenic Thompson --krikey!-- some 25 (or whatever) years ago. And she split for the greener pastures of somewhere in Kansas where she married a pig farmer and tamed down slightly, so there's no 'story' there.

Of course, I have recently learned that the (even worse looking, deserted, dilapidated and damn near demolished) motel up the street (that's not shown in any of these pix) is up for sale. Only $279,000, too! (But I do know the realtor lady pretty well, and I bet with a little sweet talkin' she could be talked down a grand or two, just in case you might be interested....)

There's no 'stories' in these places. Stories --real ones, anyhow-- require characters and plots and twists and red herrings and a resolve. Pictures don't convey any of those sorts of things. Unless you know the actors, and the director, and the rich guy who puts up the bucks to present those things on the Big Screen. And the Assistant PA girl, too.

I was in my touring kayak which is a displacement boat and sits in the water rather than on top of it like the wide recreation style boats do. My butt's actually below the waterline, plus I was resting my elbows on the boat deck to steady the camera. I sit in a little 19" cockpit.

Sounds like a great way to get close.
Thanks for the explanation.

These images make one wonder what stories these old buildings could tell about the life there once!

As mentioned in my post yesterday, today I present in this final set one highlight image for each major town that we have visited on this tour. As in the past, I have determined the post with the highest viewer attention in that area and have selected a representative picture, most of the time using the image mentioned the most in the viewers comments. I will post 13 images, 10 in the regular post and 3 in the replies so please give me a couple of minutes to load the 3 extras before sending the comments - Thank you.

I believe I have provided a very extensive coverage of this area in these multiple posts of 10 images at a time. Just in case some of you would like to review all the images in one go, or would like to view one of these places in even more depth, then I would like you steer you towards my online photo albums. For each trip, I generate 2 sets of photo albums, a condensed version under the access path "Short" and a substantially larger version under the access path "Full". For more voluminous trips like this one, I also devise a "Selected Highlights" album that merges the most salient images into one album to provide a quick and easy overview over the entire tour. For this particular trip I ended up with 5 regional albums and one Highlights album under the overall title of "North European Plain". After accessing my web site per the link below, click on the tab "Albums-Chronological" in the top bar.
The images posted on UHH in general follow the photos I present in the "Short" album version, at times I add I few additional pictures from the "Full" version, to make a complete count of 10 images in a post. Thus if you are interested to quickly review the photos shown in UHH, then click on the link "Short" for the particular topic you want to see. If however you are interested in seeing additional pictures from a specific area or overall, then please click on the link "Full". Or click on the link "Short" for the "Selected Highlights" if you want just a general overview. - There is additional information regarding the site and the albums, you can access these under the tab "Hints" in the top bar; at the same place you can also find a listing of all the tours I have already presented here under the tab "Ugly Hedgehog. The tour just completed now is not yet indicated in this listing, and thus the reference pages in the last column are not up-to-date, add approximately 3 pages to the listed figure, but the order of the albums is correct.

I will be off the UHH site for the next little while, hopefully having a medical problem corrected and attending to a heap of things that have been left undone during these last three intense months while I was posting the "North European Plain" travelogue. I will try to look in on the site briefly every day to see what is going on and then hope to start up another travelogue hopefully in the not too distant future. - Thank you once again for riding along with me and participating with comments, questions and observations on this now completed tour - Joe Weber
