Cherish the images you have in your MIND. SEEING things is more important than CAPTURING them, although I surely understand your angst.

The D850 has a setting that allows use of DX lenses, with no problems of vignetting or anything else.
I use my D850 with the 18-200 VR all the time, and that is my walk-around lens.
The 850 is an exceptional camera, and many think it's the best available camera now. It is, though, is a very complicated camera and not for beginners or those who don't want to invest very serious learning time.
Good luck to your friend.

BEWARE!! I just had major hassles on 2 trips to alaska in the last 6 weeks, from Oregon.
1. The new airline regulations as of June 4 (I flew on June 5 and did not know about them) require carry-ons to be smaller: 22x14x9. My ThinkTank bag was 1 INCH too big on 2 dimensions, and they insisted I check the bag - which I surely was NOT going to do with 2 D850's and a 500mm lens in it, not packed to be thrown around baggage.

I ended up carrying 2 non-padded cameras and that heavy lens in my already-too heavy carryon. Just about killed me.

2. For the next trip last week, I bought a new smaller case, exactly 22x14x9. It was an inch too fat with the cameras and a smaller lens in it. Had to hand-carry one damn camera again.

3. I had also bought a new ThinkTank Glass Limo backpack for the 500, and put the tripod on it. NO GO. I had to stuff the tripod into my checked luggage, which made it 2 # over the 50# limit - so I had to re-pack yet again, and pay for an extra bag.
I very nearly missed my plane, even though I was there 90 min early.

Can't tell you how furious i was....

I usually travel with my husband, who is a great sherpa, and we divide up the camera stuff, but these times, he couldn't go.

Unless you have a huge tripod, it will fit in a large suitcase. Take the head off and roll it in a towel or clothes. Then be very careful what you're expecting the airlines to let you carry. Anxiety over lens damage is NOT a good way to fly!
Good luck -

Sandy R-B

PS: We have Pre-check too, but this only speeds up the security check. It's the person at the gate who will not let you through with too many carry-ons, or too-large bags. Be ESPECIALLY careful with the smaller commuter planes.

My walk-around lens on every camera, including the D850, has been the 18-300 VR.
Nothing surpasses it, imo.
I also have the 14-24 WA Nikon, and rarely use it. Definitely NOT worth the cost, imo.
If you want a wider image from the 18-200 - which I rarely do - I simply take a couple serial images and easily stitch them together in a Panorama program.

If you're interested, I have a like-new one for sale - my old older one didn't get back from being cleaned before a trip, and I purchased another with the intent of selling it asap.
It has been used for 2 weeks only. Receipt included.
Contact me if interested.

I have both, for different purposes.
The 18 - 200 is on my Nikon D850 85% of the time.
The WA has it's uses, but they are limited. I use it only a couple times a year.
An easy solution for the 18-200 if you want a wide - angle shot: take several shots and stitch them together with easy software into a PANORAMA - either the traditional horizontal, or VERTICAL.
By the way, If anyone is looking for a like-new 18-200 VR (latest release) I have a second one for sale - see the Classifieds here.

Love mine - best camera available, IMO. As a pro bird photographer, primarily, I want all the MP I can get, for enlargement purposes.
The high ISO ability is astounding. I keep mine set at 1600 to be ready for any flight shots, and have been up to 35oo with little noise - NR always cleans it up easily.
One of my online galleries here, using mostly the D850: https://www.naturescapes.net/galleries/user_gallery.php?u=16471 (cut and paste)

I do wish they had kept the small pop-up flash, though, as I used it often for a touch of fill-flash. I suspect the next model of the D850 will have this again.
It's a pain to have to dig up and attach flashes.

Remember, you still have to be fairly adept at Photoshop to turn out the best images. No camera yet matches our eyes.
