Well, i've boxed the lens back up. The mount on the Tamron 200-500 is just a hair too large in circumference to properly fit into the camera mount. Will send it back tomorrow. thanks for your input!

I own a Nikon d800 body only camera. It works great. However, i purchased on ebay a mint condition Tamron 200-500 zoom lens. The description said that it would fit my camera model. It is a beautiful lens, however, it does not fit my nikon d800 camera. I purchased this lens for $365. I am going to send it back, but as a last resort thought i would ask if an adaptor could be added to make this combo work. Any advise is welcome!

I recently "googled" on my smart phone "abbreviations for Nikon lenses". It brought up "all" the different meanings! We all learn something new everyday! There are so many of them that i check it every now and then. Still many things to learn!!

This is what may have happened

This is the "BEST" explanation that can also be clearly seen. I see what you mean with this wonderful diagram/picture! Thank you for this thoughtful explanation.

Are you sure that it is not one of your fingers in front of the lens?

I don't think i am placing my finger in front of the lens. i took a few more shots with a shorter lens and do not incur the problem. Could be that the flash was being affected by my longer lens?! Thanks for your advise!

This reminds me of something that happened quite a few years ago. My mom complained that all of her pictures were coming out with a red blob in the corner of every shot.

One day we had the family together and she went to take a picture of us. As she held up the camera to take a shot, I realized that I had solved the mystery. The way she was holding the camera, her red-painted fingernail was placed right in front of the lens.

Needless to say, we all had a good laugh.

A large dark shadow like that is NEVER going to result from dust or dirt in your viewfinder or mirror. You would need something the size of a cockroach to do that! It is ALWAYS something external getting in the way. The shutter too fast for the flash is the classic. Or a lens too long and casting a shadow using the flash. Glad you tracked down this gremlin for yourself!

Well, the problem is somewhat neutralized, however, as stated that if i wish to use the flash the camera is going to have to be "looked out" by a licensed technician. Daytime pictures i can take with no problem(so far) but night-time pictures (with the flash) will require the use of the pop up. I do remember taking some daytime pictures with the"AutoMode" on and the flash unit popped up. I don't know why but the picture came out fine with no dark spot. Now that has changed.

^^^Terry, I can't think of ANY situation in which Nikon would deliberately have one of their camera models display this type of behavior.

This sounds much more like a malfunction than one of user error.

In any event, a licensed technician will be able to sort it out...

I will be contacting a licensed technician for correcting this problem. Thanks again for all your advise!

You don't detach the mirror in order to get to the sensor. The camera has a "Lock mirror up for cleaning" function that flips the mirror up and opens the shutter. You just want to make sure the battery is fully charged before you start. If the battery ran out of juice while you're cleaning, the mirror would come back down.

I did this step last Sunday and the mirror stayed up(battery was fully charged). Mirrors and sensor all looked clean. I watched a video to make sure that i did not damage anything while cleaning. Pictures taken after my cleaning job came out fine. I have a small cleaning kit with swaps , liquid and jet blower and learned to be careful when cleaning. Thank you for your instructions.
