DAM means Digital Asset Management. It is not only for images. The Adobe DAM is probably the most familiar example to people on this forum, but it is oriented toward management of images. Digital assets can include any digital file. Images, word processing, programs, passwords, program configuration files, emails, data, etc.
A DAM program can manage the storage, documentation, access, and status of digital assets. In general it will be a database with some sort of searchable index. It will allow searches over one or many parameters.
I have a lot of stuff on my computer, but the largest pile is images, so I need a DAM to manage that. I have other digital assets but the volume is small enough that I can keep it in my memory (although it's aging). For that I use Lightroom. However, Lightroom only handles images, not other digital files, so the OP is looking for something else. He specifically mentioned PDFs and Word files, although he did say he wants to organize his photo stuff.
