I want to thank everyone for their advice and the links to research the flashes, I think I'll probably go with the Nikon unit, I think it would be money well spent, I'll just have to save a little more. (It's winter and I'm not overly anxious to go into the mountains anyway so I've got time.)
Thanks again.

I would like to get an external flash for my D-80 an frankly my head is starting to hurt from searching online.
I want to be able to use it off camera (on a flash stand)
and perhaps someday add mutiple flashes though not right away.
I don't want to buy just anything and end up with a piece of junk but do to other things on my financial to do list (food, rent, etc.) I have a budget to stick to.

Can anyone give me a direction to steer?
Thanks.

Both formats have their good and bad points, shooting in jpeg the camera will corrections for you but they're imbedded in the file so there isn't much you can do about it creatively, the downside to raw is the difficulty down/up loading becuase the files are so big that most progams can't process them you can load them into Adobe using somthing like nikon transfer but depending where you want to keep them after you most likely will have to change formats
