To me, this is not a mechanical malfunction but some sort of firmware or software issue. The fact that the Nikon representative said the purple dot issue was caused by impact (when in fact they sent out a firmware update to fix that months ago) and the fact that you didn't have this problem until you got the camera back from Nikon to me warrants another call to their service center. Unfortunately a lot of these customer service reps just follow a script and don't really know what they are talking about.

I called again and the answer I got was that the flash problem was also caused by the impact. Again, the camera was never dropped. In fact, due to the pandemic, it was hardly used before these problems cropped up. Nikon sent me a picture taken by one of their technicians to prove that the camera had suffered an impact. It showed a small piece of plastic broken off in the inner casing. Based on this, I feel that the camera was damaged when I purchased it.

How much did you spend on the “A1000”?

I don't remember the exact amount but it was somewhere in the vicinity of $500. I bought it for my wife to use when we travel. Unfortunately, the pandemic started soon after that so it never got used much before the warranty expired. Even now, it only has about 600 clicks.

I don't think there is a way to turn off the flash in the menu. You turn it off by retracting it. And you turn it on by pushing the little button on the side that releases it (or puts it in the upright position).

Is the flash pop up control button (that puts the flash in the upright position) jammed in some way? I would try raising and lowering the flash a few times to see if that operation works smoothly. These cameras are pretty well built, and to me it would take quite a jolt to cause damage, as Nikon is saying. Make sure that area is clean. Somehow, the camera thinks the flash is raised when it's not.

Also, does the flash fire when contracted in bright conditions?

Thank you for your suggestions. I tried raising and lowering it several times and it doesn't appear to be jammed in any way. It also seems to be seated properly.

And yes, the flash fires even on a bright sunny day.

Have you checked the menu? I turned my flash "OFF" in the menu of my D7100 and D7200.

Don

I've also turned off my flash in my D7100 but can't find a menu item to do this on the A1000. I've also been through the manual and can't find how to do this. It seems to me that when the flash is retracted, it should be off.

I had this camera and I know the purplish circle was somewhat common (especially when taking a photo pointing toward the sun) but Nikon sent out a firmware update that was supposed to fix that. Regarding the flash issue, that's one I have not heard before. So the flash is firing even when the flash is down?

Yes, the flash fires even when the unit is down. I will check the firmware and make sure it is the latest. That's a good suggestion.

I did try the reset and it didn't work.

To give a little more background, I was having a problem with a circle in the middle of most, but not all, pictures. The circle was overexposed and had a purplish cast. I sent the camera to Nikon for repair. They sent it back telling me that the problem was due to impact damage and it was not worth fixing. The camera has hardly been used (fewer than 600 clicks) and has never been dropped or even bumped. Also, a search of consumer reviews on this camera indicates that other people have had the same problem.

Interestingly, after Nikon returned it the overexposed purplish circle problem seems to be resolved but now I have the flash problem. I'm wondering if in inspecting the camera they inadvertently solved on problem but created another.

I've recently noticed that the flash on my Coolpix A1000 fires even when it is retracted. I had not noticed that in the past. Is this normal for this camera? Seems like a waste of battery to me. I've gone through the menu and there doesn't seem to be a way to shut it off. Any thoughts?

Thomas902 - You hit the nail on the head. I am looking for inspiration along with ideas to practice my art. I'm not looking to sell anything. I just want to get better at my hobby for my own enjoyment.

I have been working very closely with my surgeon for a long time. During the past year replacement lenses have been changing/improving at a rapid pace! A year ago a type of lens called the Vivity was the latest-greatest thing. The Vivity lens was touted as being able to enable me to see at both close and far in each eye without glasses. The problem with that lens is that I would not be able read small print in dim light. Also, they did not come in the strength I required. I waited until the company that makes the lens started to make then in the power I required. By then a new type of lens had been developed. This new lens makes it possible for the doctor to adjust the perimeters of the lens after the surgery by shining a bright UV light into my eye. He will be able to make fine adjustment in terms of both plus and minus diopter corrections and even make astigmatic corrections. He does not make any guarantees but he tells me that after he is done I may be able to see both close and far out of each eye without glasses. (I don't understand how that is even possible!) An alternative is that I will be able to see good at distance with my dominant right eye and that my left eye will be adjusted to read fine print up close. (Mono-vision)

The worst case is that I will be able see at a distance without glasses like you can, but will need drugstore cheaters to read fine print. All of these options sound better than how I can currently see. The surgery is scheduled for this Thursday. I look forward to it.

I must be one of the first people to be getting this lens at my doctors location. Someone from the lens manufacturing company is gong to be at the surgery to assist my doctor with the surgery! I hope they know what they are dong!

Best of luck to you. And, I'm sure the doctors know what they are doing.

If you're insulted over a generic reference found on an online discussion site that you then attribute specifically to you and to your camera, that's a problem you have with your equipment, not with me. Don't shake your pacifier at me.

I have read many of your comments in the past. You constantly put down those who haven't made the transition to mirrorless as though they are second class citizens and there is something wrong with them. In doing so, you use derogatory and insulting terms. I am not the only one who has noticed this as many others have commented on it as well. To be honest, I don't pay any attention to your posts anymore and rarely even read them because they are basically worthless and add little to the discussion.

As some have also pointed out, you have the ability to add to the discussion and made some good posts. Unfortunately, they are rendered inconsequential by your other tiresome, annoying, and juvenile comments. I would urge you to rethink what you say. You could be a valuable contributor, but currently you are not.

I stand by my original comment, but in the spirit of constructive criticism I'll say it a little more nicely this time: You need to show a little respect and some maturity.

So, what you are saying is that when you insult people you know exactly what you are doing and that it is intentional. I think it's time you grew up.
