Very nice. I notice there are many at very low speed and still sharp , like 1/30th of a second!. And still no motion artifact, the D7000 (or was it) has no IBIS, the lens may have VR

1. Monopod and beanbag. Thanks. I am also considering a clamp . Lots of people recommend against monopod: not sure yet. T

2. Take your BEST lenses. ...100-400 and the two primes (well the 18-400 i good redundancy; a few years back my Nikon 70-300 crashed, and I had my older Tamron 18-270 with me, which focuses slower but is much lighter. Not bringing this e this time. ..I understand the 10-24, would my 18-55 kit lens (not used in years) be just as useful as 17-70 if at all ?

3. Take the Sigma 30mm..... of course.

4. iPhone 15 Pro Max : I am bringing for all those reasons. It has 500 GB and last year used it to load SD card to my cloud storage from Egypt. . (Not sure if that will work in Botswana). /quote]

[quote=Robertl594]I will keep this quick, with no eye rolls.
Best things I took were a quick release super clamp and gimbal.

How did you get away bringing this? It must be incredibly heavy. I am allowed only 44 lb per person including everything (yes including carry-on). With 2 camera bodies, 2 large lenses . batteries , chargers, Iwill have room for one pair of shoes, 2 underwear and T shirts, toothbrush and of course forget about shaving?

I've only been to Africa once, but I intend to fix that! But I can say, from what I learned that one time is 400mm is not nearly long enough! Full Stop! I carried a Nikon D850 and a Nikon 200~500 f/5.6 zoom. Something bigger would have been nice, but with a 45MP sensor I could crop significantly and still get nice long distance shots. I've never been interested in people photography, so shoot me! But yes, a shorter lens would have come in handy a few times.

I actually had a shorter lens attached to a Nikon D500. A couple on the tour brought nothing but a cell phone so, nice dumb guy that I am, I loaned them the D500 with a Nikon 70~200mm lens. FX lens so they got 300mm equivalent, so not too bad. I also gave them a few quick and dirty SLR shooting lessons over the next few dinners and, of course, an SD card since their super duper(!?) cell phone didn't use one! I missed a few close shots, but I can live with that. I never saw any of their photos so I don't know if it was all worth it or not!

Next time I go, I might invest in a teleconverter. I was never impressed with them with film gear, but I've heard good things about them lately??

I will have 400mm on my crop sensor camera, so effectively 600mm ; not thinking about heavier . Thanks.

My friend went and his suggestion for people shooting was bring a lot of single dollar bills to tip the people you shoot. A dollar goes a long way. With groups there might be elders who are in charge of groups so don't be shy about handing them money

Last June we were in Egypt. I should not have bothered exchanging any money into Egyptian: next time - if knowing what is going on there if there is a next time - I will bring a wad of US 1 dollar bills for such events as bathrooms, tips, and whatever else comes to mind.

[quote=Hip Coyote]Yep...the museum is called the Apartheid Museum not the anti-apartheid museum. It is on our list .

[quote=Hip Coyote]This thread is full of excellent advice. A few added thoughts

The notion of using a phone... yes we are taking our iphone15's of course.

Re: Johannesburg: we are staying one day (buffer in order not to miss the start of tour.
Is it not the Anti-Apartheid movement ? :)

and I looked up some of your previous postings: I did consider getting a Zfc but don't see the great advantage over what I already have except it is mirrorless.

Yes i have already read a number of threads. This will be our first safari, we had organized this twice before, but had to cancel once of back surgery of my wife and once for Covid. We hope third time is a charm.
1. I already know to take two cameras (D7200 and D3200), batteries and SD cards up the kazoo. Still undecided about monopod and type of camera support (window clamp, bean bag or forget it).
2. Taking my Tamron 100-400mm (4.5-6.3) and Tampon 18-400mm (3.5-6.3), have not decided which lens on which camera (question #1 : makes difference? : probably the 100-400 on the D7200)..
3. I do have 2 other lenses Sigma 30mm 1:1.4 and Meike 85mm 1.8 . (question #2 : would this be helpful if you go out early in the morning while it is still dark and the other lenses might simply not hack it in that little light, versus the extra hassle, weight and need to change lenses for which I have been warned).
4. and finally: I might have considered taking my Tokina for the wide views especially when we will be at Victoria Falls, but it was stolen on my last trip returning from Egypt (see my posts). I had not used it that much. Question #3: is my 18-400 wide enough or is a new Tokina too much money and weight to carry anyway ?
Looking forward to the responses.

Two of my favorite cars when I lived in Netherlands were French made : Peugeot 204 and Citroen DS ( borrowed that one). The disparaging remarks about the French abilities in cars are IMHO misplaced .

I looked at these pictures and when moving them up and down on my iPhone , in the 3rd picture the right oblique beam seems to move! Is this real , is this moving picture , or is it my eyes or a “trompe d’oeil”?

I chose the belt since I can carry the camera on either right or left hip and away from the midline. Being 87 years old and not the mountain goat I was 50 years ago I would hate to trip and fall forward with a camera strapped to my chest.

I did exactly that last January in Joshua Tree National Park with my kids and grandkids: missed the last step on our first day walk and went down straight frontwards. I did not injure my hands (I play the violin) or arms, not my camera (hanging at my chest on the Peak Design clip), but sprained ankle and was in pain 3 weeks. The camera and lens were unscathed.
