Please excuse my rant....but I'm really getting fed up with some people (okay...more than some) can't seem to contribute anything helpful. Maybe that's why I like coming to the UHH. For the most part everyone is as helpful as they can and when it warrants or in Chit Chat..funny.

While we were in the moving process and after we moved to Florida I was in some groups about moving to Florida. I put up with the negativity then because I was looking for information. Now that we've moved I'm there to help those looking to move to Florida. Unfortunately, there are a number of nabobs of negativity who have to complain about how bad they have it in Florida, be it traffic, the heat, bugs, or whatever. Then telling people not to move to Florida for whatever reason they have.

I've already left a few of them because of this....but it still frustrates me. Yeah...I know I'm old and this is what the inter webs has become.

Please resume your normal programming.

Aside from the hurricanes, tropical storms, humidity, sink holes, alligators, water moccasins and annoying bug population, I enjoyed the best beaches in the world, great fishing, beautiful sunsets, mild winters and plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit year round. It's not the sleepy laidback state it was when I grew up there, but there are plenty of rural small towns that are just lovely to live in. Snow Birds have known that for the better part of a century.

When I lived there, we used to migrate to Franklin, NC to cool off.

Over the years I have replaced nearly all my clocks with "atomic" ones. Some have very sensitive antennas and I don't have to do anything since they change right on time. Even though I am fairly close to Fort Collins, some of my oldest clocks won't reset and I have to put them in a window facing north towards Colorado.

It looks like the camera wars are in full tilt. Every camera will shoot great pictures if the guy or gal behind the camera does his or her part. I've used at one time or another nearly every camera brand, both film and digital. I have a few great pictures from each of them and thousands of bad pictures from all of them. My advice is just get out and practice a lot if you want more great pictures.

Until recently, prime lenses were sharper than zooms. Today, they are nearly the same in optical quality. On my old cameras that load film, primes are a lot better with few exceptions. When I'm looking for a one lens solution, such as travel and family get togethers I use my modern zooms.

I think it could cause some problems with some photo contests but otherwise, who really cares.

I use an orange filter on my film camera lenses, unless it is a yellow or red. I suppose you could say it has a secondary purpose of protecting the lens.

I was stationed at a radar station close to Mcgrath, AK back in the 70's. I worked in the power plant where we had 10 diesel generator sets. The lowest I remember was -56F. The plant was not insulated and had single pane windows. It was pretty normal to see a row of snow on the window sill inside but up near the cat walk over the cylinder heads, it was usually 90F. We ran the generators full time and had to make oil changes every night on at least one of them. We kept the oil barrels outside on a rack. In the cold, you could open the bung and nothing would come out since the oil was like jello. We would go out and dolly several barrels inside to warm the oil where we could pour it. I was so used to the cold that I rarely had on more than a tee shirt and gloves when I went out to get the oil.

Yes, it is strange how the news was presented. Hardly a word about the Dash 8 Coast Guard plane, which was the reason for the crash. The A350 either collided with the Dash 8 shortly after touchdown or landed on top of the Dash 8 killing 5 of the 6 crew members. I haven't heard any more reports on the lone survivor who was the Captain/pilot of the Coast Guard plane. It was preparing to takeoff from the same runway to carry emergency supplies to the earthquake victims on the west coast of Japan. Clearly, somebody made a big mistake. Either the tower controllers or one of the pilots. The NTSB report will reveal what really happened. Good news that the passengers and crew on the A350 remained relatively calm. Otherwise, the disaster would have been even worse.
