I've spoken with him a few times via emails. He's a very nice man and a wonderful photographer. He was more
than willing to answer any questions I had about his work and how he processes his images.

Hi Ray,
Yes, keep the tank as full as possible and never hit the fill the tank option at the pumps. It might put a hold on your credit card for a few days. Always pick an amount of money in gas, even if you can go inside and pay. I've read that or heard it on a video many times. Pick an amount of liters, don't use fill up.
I'm staying overnight in Reykavik the first night then heading off to the northwest for 2 nights. I'm staying near the black church. After that I'm heading to Vik for 2 nights and will be in that area. Then one night farther east before heading back to the Vik area. From there I'll do the golden circle and end up back in Reykavik. So more than half of my time will be in the south coast to Hofn area.
Assuming the weather cooperates somewhat, that's the plan. If you prepay for the hotels (I did for the first night and might do one or two more, though I have reservations for them all) you can check in early. I know since we land very early, I prepaid for the hotel in Reykavik for an early check-in. That way we can wander around the city and not worry about our bags or even grab a nap in the afternoon since we will be traveling all night.
Enjoy the trip. I know I'm looking forward to it.

Hi,
I've never been to Iceland, however, the plan is to visit starting in 3 weeks. I'm taking an FLM tripod, which is pretty sturdy. I am doing a self-drive trip, so carrying a tripod isn't that much of a hardship. I also intend on doing some long exposure photography, hence the need for a tripod, as well as panos and multiple exposures to blend.
I'm leaving the lighter tripod at home because of the potential movement with the wind. I'm sure a lot of it will have to do with the weather as to how much I'll really get to use the tripod, but since it's likely a once in a lifetime trip, I'd rather have it than not.
I will say however, that it really depends on yours shooting style and your subjects. I would think for waterfalls, a tripod will be handy. For birds, and general shooting, not so much.
Mike
Ha, yes I remember going there. Were you on the photo tour when you visited that site? Did you see the waterfall
not far behind the cemetery? Nice shot
Mike
Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions. I'm so looking forward to this trip.

It would be useful to know what camera you are using. Does it have a full-freame sensor or some type of crop sensor?
Yes, thanks.. its a Nikon Z8 and Z7II full frame

Bring a medium-sized microfiber towel to dry off your optics. Best advice I received from the tour company. If you're making any sort of plane transfers, travel entirely with carry-ons. Icelandair doesn't seem to have any NorCal bases, or at least they didn't when I checked, and Alaska Air managed to lose our bags both ways.

Thanks, but I dont think I can make it with only carry on. Well, my wife could never do it.. smiles. We will be there 9 days, so she will need at least one suitcase and a carry on. I've got my camera bag where I can stash enough clothes for a couple of days, but we are flying on Delta, so hopefully our bags will arrive with us.
Hello all,
I'm off to Iceland in a few weeks. I was wondering from anyone who has gone in the past, what focal length they found most useful. I realize much has to do with your subject matter and style of photography, but in your opinion what's the widest and longest focal length actually needed for mostly landscapes. Let's not worry about puffins and whale watching, since I realize that's longer focal lengths, but I'm speaking mostly for landscapes.
I know I'm taking a 24-120. I'm likely taking a 20mm prime. I'd deciding between a 50mm prime or a 70-300.
I'm not sure I have room in the bag for both. I'm taking 2 camera bodies as well. I'm trying to keep the weight down somewhat.
thanks

Yes, there are two of them. They will fly around inside that area for at least another month while mom and dad bring them food.
Thanks, I got a photo of them while still in the nest but happy to know they are out and about.
Mike
Nice one. Was that bird out of the nest at the gator pond?
Mike
Nice job. I've tried street a few times. You don't realize how tough it can be at first until you try it. You did well.
