As a professional photographer (sports and news) for 45yrs, I can say that the Canon 1DX III is the absolute BEST sports camera I’ve ever used! Ive owned EVERY professional Canon camera body since 1976. While I’ve not shot with the R3, I can tell you the X III is so far beyond any body that I’ve ever shot with that I’m not inclined to even bother with the R3..for the near future anyway!

F stop controls the foreground and shutter speed controls the background! Slow the shutter speed a bit and watch the background lighten up!

As far as football goes you can shoot from the 25yrd line to the end zone. Al through the end zone as well. At some venues they require you to kneel in the end zone others require you to kneel everywhere while shooting! Even worse at least one stadium, LSU in Baton Rouge has two restraining lines, one for still photographers and one for videographers (the video guys get to shoot in front of the stll guys🤬🤬🤬) If I’m shooting HS which have the same restraints as college. I do get into the team boxes to shoot! My philosophy is to is ask for forgiveness rather than permission! I’ve never been asked to leave a HS box BUT they will run you out and quickly if you’re in a team box in the SEC or any National TV game! If you are caught more than once doing that you will be removed from the field and ejected, sometimes they run you on the first infraction 😒… trust me on that one!! That’s just one reason why shooting at larger schools you’re required to wear vests with numbers on em. They know who you are immediately and radio down to get you to follow the rules..or else! It’s not fun trying to explain to your boss why you didn’t get “THE” shot after being removed!!

Awesome pictures. Thanks for sharing. These are the epitome of filling the frame. I especially like #6. What camera, lens, settings ? Paul

Thanks! I shoot a Canon 1DX III w/ EF200-400 / manual @ f4 or (5.6 with extender engaged)(wide open) 1600 shutter speed/auto ISO, IS off!
This camera/lens set up is spot on focusing and super fast, focusing and frames rate per second! I use two button back focus during each play. If a frame is ever out, it’s almost always operator error!

Starphotog, great work and thanks for adding all the settings and equipment helps fill in the blanks for us beginners on 'how he do that' besides being able capture that moment, not an easy task. Do you shoot for a newswire or publication?

Keep posting, look forward to your sets
Rick

Thx, Yes I shoot for a newspaper and the University as well as AP (when requested)
