The RX10iv focus has some quirks. I suggest you read up on the various zoom options. Here is a small video that covers one of it's oddities.

if this is the 2nd reply please forgive -
this clip is spot on and settle's my issue - too bad Sony repair facility couldn't have provided this information.
Thank you for this

I'm not sure what the closest focusing distance would be at 300mm and 400mm for the distance that you are taking the picture from. I would check that first.
Exactly my point, Thank you

Thank you for sharing - I'll look closer at the books
Why I am scratching my head; if 200 & 400 OK - why not 300 ? ? ?
Love this camera for all that it has to offer.....
however, I have recently stumbled on a glitch in the system and am using my first ever post to ask other users of this camera to see if their camera will do the same thing - as so -
standing approx 5-7 ft from a high contrast target (I used a flower bush) using whatever mode you choose (I used program) record an image at 200mm - 300mm - 400mm.
I have now repeated this experiment with two identical camera's with the same result - 200mm in focus, 300mm out of focus, 400mm in focus.
Any response will be greatly appreciated
Thank you very much
Keep up the wonderful web site....
