Several Lumix models are already on my suggestion list. She and our older son will be here for two weeks around Christmas, I've suggested she could play with my T6i and an older Nikon Coolpix point-and-shoot (which I still use at times because it fits in a pocket and takes good pictures.)

I suspect she's not used all the capabilities of her iPhone yet, either. (And neither have I, I'm sure.) Aside from depth-of-field control, I find my iPhone takes decent enough pictures most of the time. My son pointed out that the best camera is the one you have in your hand right now.

A visit to the local camera store is also on the suggestion list.

Don't know the budget, probably well under $500 though. (Her first flute was an inexpensive one, now she's got a high quality one because the private flute teacher she's been studying with thought she was ready for it.)

I suspect size/weight is going to be a major consideration, which is why Lumix is on the list. She's likely to want something that will fit in a handbag or backpack (and needs to be durable enough to survive there.)

Yeah, she's a Junior and just starting to think about colleges, currently leaning towards possibly studying in Germany (where a friend of hers lived for several years.) She's interested in so many different things, I have no idea what she's thinking about studying in college, much less what kind of career she might want. She's into music, theatre, dance, cooking and now photography, and those are just the ones I know about.

Our younger son spent 7 1/2 months studying in Germany when he was in college, minoring in German while majoring in mathematics and computer science.

She's 900 miles away, so a sitdown isn't likely until they come to visit in mid-December. I don't know how much she knows about camera technical matters. (I'm not sure how much *I* know about them, either.)

I'm guessing she found the NEZINI on social media, it's all the rage on tik-tok, but I've seen some suggestions that many of those recommendations are planted.

The biggest thing I see going for it is that it is light. I don't see that as a primary requirement, but I'm not a 16 year old girl.

I might suggest she spend some time while she's here playing with my DSLR (Canon T6i) and some lenses.

Our 16 year old granddaughter has requested some kind of digital camera for Christmas, she wants one that is lightweight but still has ISO/aperture/shutter speed controls. It should accept filters but does not necessarily need to support interchangeable lenses, but a step up from iPhone or point-and-shoot cameras. (I think lightweight is a key consideration.)

One that she suggested is the NEZINI 4K digital camera, not a brand I am familiar with.

Any suggestions?

I was surprised that a robo left a recording last week.

When they do, it's often one that starts mid-sentence, intentionally.

I've been tempted to change the message on our answering machine to:

If you know our cell phone numbers, please call us on them. Otherwise, leave a message, we'll return calls we feel are legitimate.

So if a "lurker", which we never knew/saw, quietly went somewhere else, how would we know?

I would imagine that site traffic always goes up and down, people come and go, maybe the phase of the moon also affects it.

Now you have to ask Admin, is it about metrics or how he wants to build the site.
For me it's how I want to build the site...
Who's voice is more important, regulars or lurkers... (show quote)

I don't have metrics that allow me to answer those questions. Is the site profitable, or is someone bankrolling it out of personal funds? It appears UHH is hosted at AWS. I know from experience that AWS fees can add up quickly.

How many digest subscribers are there vs how many people who actually post, and how many of those post frequently? Are regular posters more likely to click on ads than casual visitors? (The answer on that varies from site to site, at least according to Google.)

So, lets say, 50 out of how many users rule?

(I've been a web admin/developer for about that long also, but only did a dozen or so sites for select businesses/organizations since it is a "hobby". Been programming (in some manner) for about 50 years now.
No complaints/comments for the four I currently administer, yet...
But none of them have a forum.)

How many active posters are there and how many are complaining? And what about lurkers who don't post, they just quietly go somewhere else?

I'm officially retired, but the company I used to work for changed its forums in early June (due to security issues with the previous platform) and 3 1/2 months later traffic is still a third of what it was. It's slowly growing, but it might take a year to get back to the old level, though organization membership is at an all-time high.

In April I changed two other sites I have run as a hobby for over 30 years, one of them rebounded quickly, the other one appears in danger of dying out, though they're similar communities.

That capability is really already there if one takes the time to view options in 'Digest' - read the stickies.

If you're referring to the filter option, it is better than nothing, I guess, but not really the same capability IMHO. YMMV.

I did read it, but I think it is misguided.

I've been a web admin for 30 years, you have to pay attention to your audience or it goes away.

The admin may disagree, but it seems like the recent revision to the digests is a flop.

So, how can we improve it?

How's this: Give us an option to get a separate email for each section we receive digests on. There's never been an obvious order within sections, so I don't know if I care what order they're in, but if each digest is a separate email then when I want to see birds, I can open that email, when I want to see macro stuff, I can open that email, etc.

If people want to receive a random melange of posts, they don't check the 'separate emails' option. Simple, no?

If people want random or disorganized digests, they're welcome to them.

There are undoubtably topics I will miss seeing because I don't go through an ordered digest every day picking out interesting threads on, say, birds or macro photography. I'm comfortable with that, I hope those posters are.

And if I read the mood of the crowd, I would expect overall read counts to go down considerably, and probably ad clicks as well. Unlike others, I suspect the ads make a fair profit for the site owner(s).

I have unsubscribed from the digests, because they are too disorganized to follow. They appear to be nothing more than a random list of recent posts. At least the old digests were organized by subject matter, so if I had no interest in bird photos today I could just page down.

I will probably continue to visit UHH from time to time to look at the areas I'm interested in, but without the daily digest reminder it will probably be far less frequently.
