Opie, meet Molly. She's 11 years old now and still full of energy. You have loads of fun ahead.

Nice shots. One doesn't see these little teakettles very often. I enjoyed them very much.

Oh, I did make an error in the original posting, this blast furnace was back dated to 1915, not 1950. I love the learning curve and making changes to correct past errors made when building the layout. Even when I'm the only one who knows the change was made and why. It's a fun and multidisciplinary hobby.

From what I remember about blast furnace metallurgy, the model is missing the ore, flux, coke feeders that fill at the top. The design appears to be of latter vintage that used high top pressure. The reason Pittsburgh across the Monongahela River from US Steel's Homestead Works became reddish brown was with no HTP a lot of hematite got blown to the winds.

Actually, the high line is behind the blast furnace and the bridge with the skip buckets runs up the back side of the furnace as you can see in this old photo. Like most model railroads, mine is always undergoing changes and improvements. This photo was taken before the cold blast line and other details were added.

Nice job... good work. If you're really into model trains you may enjoy this. Locally here in the Phoenix area a group sets up and opens to the public. They've got lots of stuff as you'll see. I had a blast shooting this - just a hobby.

Thanks! That was fun to watch.

Thanks Nikonian72, the trade-off between depth of field and sharpness is what I've been playing with. I can see how f11 or f16 might be better. I'll try that.

Thanks! This portion of the layout is 24" wide so this is a foreground model. I guess if you download it you will see the detail. One interesting item, the layout is in an L-shaped room that is roughly 19' by 20' and it took about 300 figures before it started to look populated!

I've been trying to get better at creating photos of model trains. Some of these photos may be for publication or just to share.
This is a model of an HO scale blast Furnace that has been detailed to represent an installation circa 1950 or so. I used my Canon Rebel Xsi with a 50mm lens at f22 and ISO 100 which required a 5 second exposure. I'm still learning how to use the macro lens/techniques but I have been pleased with the results using the 50mm. I welcome all comments.

Thanks for posting this series... my wife and I went there on our honeymoon almost 42 years ago. Thanks for the memories.
