In 1960 the F-11 was taken out of active combat service and relegated to training pilots in a supersonic aircraft. They were stationed at NAS Kingsville and NAAS Chase field (Beeville), both in southern Texas. The squadrons were VT-23 (Kingsville) and VT-26 (Chase field). An early version of this aircraft (a short nose) is positioned on the port catapult on the USS Intrepid. The nose, wingtips and empenage were painted orange to assist the new pilots with visual recognition. The tail letters were assigned as follows -

CVWR-20, Reserve Carrier Air Wing 20 April 1970 Renamed Tactical Support Wing (TSW) in April 2007. The "AF" tail code is retained by squadrons assigned to TSW.
