I got up kind of early (for me) and I decided to go to the local park to see what I could see. These are the results.

Yeah I'm looking for a good small camera too. I don't like carrying my dslr everywhere I go and do not want to keep it in my car. My problem is I'm spoiled and want a small camera that will perform like my dslr. I'm not asking for a whole lot am I.? :)

I myself am a hands on learner and until I have an understanding on a subject can I read a manual or other how to books and comprehend what it is saying. My advice is to take a class on digital photography and learn the basics. Once u understand the lingo and basics your manual and other books may start to make sense.

I don't understand all the controversy of photoshop or natural out of the camera. Even with film we enhanced photos in the darkroom. Why wouldn't you want your pictures to pop. No matter how good a camera you have, it's not going to photograph exactly what your eyes see.

Is it possible for you to do a re-shoot?

I don't want to discourage you but that photo just does not work, the left side is too brushy and the bridge is incomplete.

If you can re-shoot can you stand back farther and get more of the bridge in the frame? Underneath looking up, road level and just a few feet to either side, and the old favorite right down the center of the bridge at eye level.

I hope this helps,

Eric

I can go back and re-shoot, but I'm afraid that it's a case of WYSIWYG. It's an active railroad bridge, and I'm afraid that getting to it to do a shot thru the bridge down the rails is not feasible. So, I guess I need to look for more accessible shots. Thank you for responding, and quite frankly I am getting somewhat frustrated with my inability to come up with a semi-good shot.

Don't give up. Look at other's photos and determine what you like about their photos and try to use it in your own photos. Also lighting is a big factor in making a photo good or bad. A different time of day early morning or evening would have improved your photos. Keep shooting!

Since when has b/w become passe? I love the b/w images. Color would have been too distracting.

This is the first time I've seen this photo. I don't visit the forum everyday. My opinion is the flower looks a bit out of focus, but I do like the composition.

I am doing a family of 3 this weekend too. The child is 18 mos. I am experienced in photographing kids and warming the child up is good advice. For the posed shots, my advice is to make sure your subjects faces are on the same plane, so they will all be in focus. Hope this makes sense, I'm not very good at explanations! ;)

I use a nikon sb800 flash. For indoors I set it on auto and use a Gary Fong diffuser and bounce the light i if I can.

Love your photos. I think your croppings are fine. Rule of thirds is basicly dividing your image into thirds and placing your main subject into one of those thirds. iow place the main subject off center. However it's just a guide line. Rules are made to be broken. :)
