What would you NOT consider a good quality head? I used a Giottos previously and I was very happy. I guess they're not as popular as they once were ...but it was made to be screwed directly onto the camera. (that's what brought on this post). I'd love to get a RRS ball head but you have to take out a mortgage to buy one and I'm only an amateur photographer so it's hard to justify the cost.

Be careful of the weight handling of ball heads. Not all are rated accurately. And in addition, it is not only the weight that has to be taken into account. If you are using a longer lens, but not one with a tripod mount on the lens, it will have an additional gravity pull downwards that can cause slippage. Very annoying when that happens! Make sure you buy a good quality head.
