I have "NIKON D750, The Expanded Guide" by Jon Sparks. It has been a helpful addition to the User's Manual. I don't remember it costing over $25.00. I haven't looked at any others to compare.

I have never posted a photo within a discussion (so hopefully this will go to the right group and discussion), but so many of you offered such great suggestions that I thought some CC after the fact would be helpful. 50mm f 9 ISO 200 shutter 125

Ok. Well I had my photo shoot with the extended family and I learned A LOT. First off DON'T let them talk you into shooting at 3:00 pm even if they have dinner plans, especially if the men are wearing sweaters and it's an unseasonably warm 80 degree afternoon :) After that it was my hope to start with the 50mm for experience and then move to the 24-120 because I was more familiar with it, and hopefully do some couple pics with my 85mm. Well I could sense that the guys were done after 20 minutes (the girls would have kept going) so I never got past the 50mm. WOW ! I have a new respect for those of you who are professional family photographers. Not only do you have to be able to know your equipment and adjust on the fly, you have to be a psychologist and comfortable delegating. It was fun and they were actually very patient, but I would love another chance. As I said CC is welcomed. I'm pretty tough :)

Using fill in flash?

I only have one speedlight and a diffuser that is about 12 inches (looks like a small soft box). I don't know how much good that will do but I agree with fill flash. I am really needing some training with off camera flash....I find it very intimidating, but it definitely makes a difference.

Any lens shorter than the diagonal of the sensor (43mm) will distort, making people on the sides of the composition look wider than they really are. Your 50mm is probably the best choice, although the zoom would work at 50mm or longer, and so would the 85.

If I were you, I would mount the nifty 50!

I'll add my tripod to my list of what to bring. Thanks

How many people in the group? This will determine how wide of an angle lens you need. Also, you should detemine the deph of field you want. Have green or fall colors out of focus would be great. This would great at 1.8, 4 might do it

There will be 7 adults and 2 of the adults will be holding children.

With a group of people I would add a suggestion that you shoot a burst of 3-4 shots each time you take a photo. Assuming you are not using flash with the shoot. The burst improves your chance of not getting someone with their eyes closed or looking off somewhere. Just my suggestion.

Best,

Yes, thank you. I will make sure that I shoot bursts. I just wrote that down on my "don't forget list"

Thank you Thank you.
I appreciate the good suggestions and advice. I learn so much from this group. The experience available to a new hobbiest is wonderful. First I have learned that the more you know, the less you know. As for my shoot, I will take all of my lenses tomorrow and my one speedlight and diffuser and with any luck I will have the opportunity to use them all. I have the most experience with the 24-120, but I really hope to gain skill with the 2 primes. I love the look when I do it right. The group is family and the adults will be patient, the toddler and baby, well who knows :). Today I will continue to annoy my husband by taking his pictures. He really wishes that I would find a new model :)
Thanks again,
Cindy

I am seeking advice and wisdom on a lens choice :)  I have been asked to take a family photo.  The group is 7 adults and 2 small children.  The shoot will be outside so there is plenty of room to move around.  I will be using a full frame camera and I have a f1.8 50mm, f1.8 85mm, and my kit lens f4 24-120mm, OR I could rent a lens.  Any thoughts on this?
Thank you

I always enjoy reading what people think of what is "trending". Then again, what is a trend? Because something is trending, does that mean it is really an accurate preview of the future? 8-track tapes "trended". I even had an 8-track recorder. For the car it made a better tape for listening in the car. Did I toss out my Teac reel-to-reel? No, of course not. Why? It was superior to 8-track tape. When it disappeared I lost no sleep. About r-t-r tape? They are still around. Am I using it. No, not at all.

Now watch what's happening with vinyl records? I left them in the dust in the 70's, and happy about it. But my students are loving them, and the world market of vinyl records is exploding. So are quality turntables. Look at watches. I've watched my students top wearing and using watches when the iPhone became popular. For the past 15 years I've hardly seen a single (college) student of mine wearing a watch. Wow, look what's happening now? Boys and young men are beginning to wear watches again. I never doubted for a moment that they would come back.

What in the world does this have to do with this topic of DSLR cameras? Few technologies totally disappear, but seem to take a break, and then return. I believe top quality products never really disappear. I may be, and you may be among the smaller group taking a beautiful capture with a camera whose lens can be changed. But I'm confident we will still be doing that 10 and 20 years from now.

I don't feel threatened by the thousands holding their smart phones to take a picture. I'm glad "photography" seems to be identified as an amazing activity, even if by those who will view their work only on a small plastic thing in their hands, yet few will enjoy that capture for years and years as it is framed on hung on their walls.

We should all continue to do what we love best. Capture it, PP it, frame it, love it, knowing the wonderful memories it brings us will continue doing that for years and decades in the future.
I always enjoy reading what people think of what i... (show quote)

Amen !

Hi Cindy,
If you are serious about portraits I would get the Nikon 135mm DC lens. Nothing even comes close. Not cheap though.

Ok, you got me curious and I looked it up, and you are correct it, it isn't cheap :) However, a professional or someone whose skill level is beyond mine could probably justify it. For me, though I am an eager learner, but I still have quite a road ahead of me.
