It's not gender specific and it does have to do with a certain instance does that even matter? The issue is photography related as I'm sure most of us, at some point, have come across someone who take no initiative to learn about their equipment. If I posted a picture here with no information regarding the photo and was completely unable to answer the basic questions about the photo would that not irritate at least some of us in this forum. It would because I've seen it. It's frustrating to me because I try to learn all I can about photography and my equipment. I take it seriously. If one isn't going to learn or even care what they're working with why not just get a point and shoot.
Gotta say I'm a bit disappointed with some of the snarky comments here.

Is it wrong to be completely frustrated with a "photographer" who has no idea what equipment she has nor what said equipment is even capable of? How on earth can you take decent photos if you have no idea what F stop or focal length any of your lenses are and can't even recal the exact type of camera you have? 😁
Ok I'm done.

What about a Nikon 50mm F/1.8?

Any recommendations for an affordable lens that is great for portraits? I have a Nikon D3200 and was thinking of the 35mm F/1.8.

Well I definitely don't have the funds to purchase a speed light SB-700 right now however I do want one quite badly after some research. 😀 But I DID purchase a Gary Fong Puffer Plus flash diffuser to use if the need arises. Thanks for all the excellent advice. I'll be doing some practicing before my event, as I have I few weeks still, and will be sure to post some photos of it.

I am not sure about the lighting at the venue. I am planning a trip before the event to see what I have to work with. I'm hoping for good lighting but preparing for low lighting. I did not want to use a flash at first however, I like the idea of a flash diffuser as well as bouncing if possible. I'm not very familiar with flash photography as I'm still quite new to the photography scene. I have a few weeks until the event so it seems that some research and practice is in order..

Thank you all for the advice! The organization is called Wings & Warroirs and it trains service dogs and matches them up with veteran's who need them. I don't really want to use my flash if I don't have to because I think it might be distracting.

Hi all. I have agreed to donate some time to a nonprofit organization taking some photos of an event they're having in a few weeks. I'm still somewhat new to photography so I need some guidance regarding the best lens to use. I have a Nikon D3200 with an 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6 as well as a 55-300mm F/4.5-5.6 lens which will not be practical as the event will be held in doors. I have already been thinking of purchasing a Nikon 35mm F/1.8 but just haven't been able to justify spending the money right now. This is a fantastic opportunity to get my information out there as a photographer. Will I be fine using the 18-55 or should I bite the bullet and get the 35mm? Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you Apaflo. That makes sense. Might be a good idea, as you mentioned, to have the release just in case.

Well I would like to have my own gallery show with them. I was hoping to portray a positive relationship between local law enforcement and the community. Not sure if they would be sold in a gallery show because this will be my first one if I can manage it. However they agencies themselves may want to use them for their own purposes as well I suppose.

Hi all! For my first major photography project I have decided to do a bit of work with some local law enforcement agencies. Am I going to need to get photo releases for any/everyone who I photograph including civilians? Also should I have a copyright? I think this project could really challenge me (I'm fairly new to photography) and I'm very excited about it but I hope I'm not getting in over my head here! :) I could really use the guidance on both of these subjects. Thanks!!

Sandi
