Hi:

There are some programs that automatically remove duplicates but I am not familiar with them and I feel they may accidentally delete some wrong photos as well. So I always delete duplicates manually. If you do not want to do so, ignore the rest of the message below.

This is what I would suggest - arrange all photos in Windows Explorer by "Date Created" . I assume all your duplicates were photos taken at the same time and they will end up next to each other. If you open them now in the Explorer or in Lightroom or some other program, you can see the duplicates next to each other and you can choose which one of them looks better or which one you like better and delete the other one.

Hope this hlps.

Having recently returned from a 3 week trip with thousands of photos, I want to organize the keepers in a slide show in chronological order. Normally that wouldn't be a problem, using 1 camera, except that I had 2 cameras, D750's, and used 3 SD cards. Being technology challenged in PP, what do I have to do to be able to place the photos in the order I wish them to be viewed? I only use LR 6.14 and shoot in raw.

Hi:
I suggest you check the clocks on both the cameras to make suere they show the same time. If not there is a way in Lightroom to change the start time on all the photos taken by one camera to match the second camera. Unless the clocks on both cameras are synced, you will not be able to mix all photos in chronological order by time taken.

Hope this helps.

[quote=TinaW]Total newbie to event photo booth photography here and I sure can use some ... any pointers/tips. (I'm more into nature photography. What was I thinking in agreeing to photograph people? Thank goodness I'm doing it for free. No pressure, but I still want to do it well. )

The backdrop will be large to accommodate individuals to groups of 30 or so. There will be a long bench as well as some decorative items including signage and flowers hanging from the top edge of the backdrop. People will just line up before and after the event to have there photo taken. There are no assigned times. And, I'm told I don't have to worry about posing people. They will pose themselves.

Hi:

You have received many suggestions so you can try to sort out which make sense and apply them.

Do not assume "there is no pressure". This is your opportunity to shine and may be use this event as a start of a new business taking group photos and family photos later which means you have to do an excellent job and use these photos as samples to show future prospects. Yes, that's the pressure.

I would practice using the cameras and lenses you have at home creating the same environment i.e. hang something on the wide wall taht can for up to 30 guests in may be 3 rows so 10 in each row, stand back enough to cover all of them, using the flash take a few photos with various settings to make sure you can have enough light at both ends of the photo. I would ask someone to stand at each end and on person in the middle and check to make sure each got enough light using whatever flash you will be using.

Not down your settings and use them on the day of the event.

Do not worry too much about getting the background in each photo, focus on the people and make sure each is covered.

Here is a trick I learned to make sure everyone's eyes are open. Ask everyone to close their eyes and open when you count to 3 and that is when you click.

Let this be the last unpaid job you do!! Good luck to you.

I have a computer full of pictures I have taken, many (all?) of them duplicated in two or more files, some different photos in different folders with the same file names, etc. etc. A couple of days ago I did a search for jpgs and some pictures showed up up to a dozen times. In other words, I have a mess that has been created over about a dozen years and I need help sorting it out. I would appreciate any suggestions.

Hi:

This is what I would do. Subscribe to Adobe Photoshop. It is only $10 per month. Along with that subscription you will also get a program called Bridge. (You will take, may be, a month or two to organize all the photos so it may cost you only $20 for two months and when you are done, unsubscribe.)

Collect all photos that look like they were taken the same day or week or month. Then open this file in Bridge. Now you can
View, sort, By Date Created
All photos will get sorted by date and time created.
Now you can easily see the duplicate next to each other and you cna keep one of them and delete the rest.

Yes, it will take time but you have made kind of a mess and it will take time to sort it out.

Good luck.

For you pros, or anyone with an opinion.

Occasionally, I get a client that wants me to post all of the outtakes (bad pictures) on their Zenfolio site so they can see them and judge for themselves whether or not to keep them.

This happened with the last wedding. I told them that I usually don't show those because it ruins the overall impression of the gallery and sometimes people even get angry when I show them because they feel like they got bad pictures.

The groom said he had several apps that could correct the photos. I told him that is uncool and that if there is something that needed work I would have retouched them and posted them.

We went back and forth like this for awhile until I just gave in and posted the outtakes because I felt like it was going to get me a bad review if I didn't. He was like, "We paid for pictures that we're not getting."

I've had this problem off and on for years. What is your opinion? I'm thinking about putting it in my contract that the outtakes will not be available for viewing, downloading or printing.

Hi:

I have been doing this for 15 years and covered more than 500 events so far. I always tell the client that I will process all the photos and give them all these photos on a DVD or on a memory stick. When I process the photos, I delete any that are duplicates or for some reason not up to my standard. None of them even know that I have deleted a few photos. I always take a lots and lots of photos so my file of selected photos is so large that no one can think I have deleted any photos.

Of course the file I deliver has all the photos renumbered in Bridge (part of Photoshop).

I would never agree to give any client any photo I believe is not good in my opinion.

I have heard of cases when one client (not mine) had posted bad photos to bad mouth the photographer. This happens rarely but why take a chance?

Say what you want about how great Adobe's subscription plan is - all that software for the price of a cup of coffee. Unfortunately, Adobe has shown other software companies that they no longer have to sell software. They can rent it on a monthly basis. Programs that you used to be able to buy and use forever and now available only by subscription. I just saw an online ad for Doodly, an animated drawing program. Just out of curiosity, I went to their website. I saw prices of $39 and $69. Not bad, I thought. Then I saw that those were the monthly charges.

I've been using Quicken for over twenty years, but now it's by subscription only, and it's the same with most anti-virus programs. $10 a month isn't much, but when you multiply that by ten or twenty, you're into big bucks.

Hi:

The primary reason Adobe moved to the subscription model is to avoid illegal copying (and also to make it easier to provide updates and support). Adobe was losing a lot of revenue when the password creating software was hacked and many such unscrupulous programmers could create a program that created new passwords that would work. So you make a copy of the Adobe software and give it to your friend and also give him a new password! And Adobe loses a sale.
I have worked for a couple of software companies and am quite aware of how much revenue the company can lose when illegal copies flood the market.
It is easy to complain about "high" prices and complain about Adobe gouging the clients, but you would have a different opinion if you owned or worked for a software company where your income depended on the revenue from the software you developed after spending a ton of money.

You caught the action perfectly. I have photographed many (>100) Indian Bharat Natyam dancers over the last many years and I understand what it takes. Keep taking such photos and post when you can.

[quote=mikec01]I have friends whose son is getting married. They cannot afford a professional photographer and, knowing that I mess around with photography, have asked me to take photographs. ...

Hi Mikec01:

Buy or borrow a flash - you will need it. Most church weddings have a rehearsal a week or two earlier. Select your camera and lenses, and a flash and attend it and try the equipment and also decide where you are going to be at every moment. Ask someone to help you - your son or daughter may be - and make sure he/she also attends the rehearsal.

Good luck.

We are finally receiving beneficial rain in NH. This had me wondering about the water resistance of today's DLSRs and lenses, specifically regarding rain, not dropping it in a lake or river (I use my GoPro for that...) It's not unusual to experience unexpected pop-up showers while out and about with the expectation that some rainwater will contact the lens and camera before I get coordinated enough to un-sling the camera and get it under cover.

I checked my Canon manual and their best advice is don't drop it in the water and if it gets wet, wipe the drops off the camera and call your authorized Canon service center. Figures.

Searching the UHH library, most posts deal with waterproof this or that and go back to 2010-2015. Things must have changed since then so I'm just asking.

Hi Tomcat:

Since you seriously believe that your photos taken by a cell phone are better than Pete Souza's photos, perhaps you should apply for the job of the next white house photographer.
