For the OP. Sorry to be off topic, but who is that handsome Fox Terrier in your avatar?

You can Google him. Thrill of the Moment Hernandez Conrad our baby who is 12. A retired champion show dog. He was quite the dog when he was a pup here in the Midwest. I think he sired 8 pups and 6 are champs like him. He is really a good dog and was born in Mexico soi say he’s bilingual. Lol. We got him from friends here in St. Louis who breed them for showing. Needless to say he runs the household. Thanks for recognizing the breed. They really do make a great addition to the family.

I and I am sure many "oldsters" on this site have similar problems. I have a severe cataract in my right eye and am using the "Russian formula" N Acetyl Carnosine--2% as found in Can-C eye drops. But that only marginally helps cataracts and might take years of eye drops. But I am trying to find info on the multi-focus type cataract eye lens replacements.---I know the problems of being one-eyed and having to use my left eye rather than the right eye (It even affects physical balance).----But it is possible. Yet I also agree---most cameras are not made for manual focus. Some "mirrorless" magnify which helps.

Here is my suggestion if auto focus fails with you.------Use a lens on your particular camera body from before AUTO FOCUS---so that it has a good---l o n g---focus scale and do as we did for the century before auto focus------MEASURE THE DISTANCE AND SET IT. I use my first 35mm camera from 1953 with a wonderful fast lens and excellent distance setting scale with "circles of confusion" markings. (It does not have split-imaging focus, either) I call it my "camera which never took a bad picture." It works as well today as it did in 1953 when I bought it with my own money.-----Eric

Eric sorry to hear about your cataract. Your 35mm sounds like it works great for you. I lost my eyesight in my non dominate eye when I was 33. The only explanation still today is inflammation. Unfortunately there is no cure. My left is strong and does all the heavy lifting. One of the worst problems is my depth perception in driving. I have a SUV and it helps to be up high. I don’t do much driving and then it’s highway or close to home. Oh and no night driving. Driving at night I can’t see hardly at all. Thank goodness my husband does most of the driving.

Thank you for replying and sharing your suggestions. I have received Sony really good tips. Take care Betty

I had same issue with focus which was caused in part by cataracts. I got cataract surgery on both eyes and instantly everything was better in color and focus. I did however, require a diopter change. I bought the upgraded diopter directly from Nikon. I shoot a D850. As for helping in the immediate, i think the suggestion of trying to shoot at F/8 and increasing speed/ISO may help. With a Z7II you should be able to shoot F/8 and ISO 500-800 without too much noise. -Jim

Jim thank you for the info. I will look at the diopter.

In the Age of Film, I often shot Kodachrome25. Under sunlight or ‘high clouds’, I usually shot at 1/250, and apertures were still F/8 or higher. Now, I usually limit my Pentax K-30 to ISO 800 or lower, still with no noticeable noise. Frankly, unless Nikon is worse than sold, I don’t see any reason to get any visible noise when shooting at F/8.

Thank you

He was using a 35mm camera when he made that comment.

I don’t see any reason to argue about this. Weegee was said to use F/16 when he used Graflex cameras. Either he did say that, or it was merely attributed to him in later days. ‘Everyone’ seems to agree that F/8 is the ‘sweet spot’ of 35mm lenses, and gives a wide DoF, so setting at camera at F/8 is a good place to start if one doesn’t want to take time focusing before shooting - basically what the OP asked.

Appreciate it

I think the answer has to be how to better utilize the autofocus capabilities of your camera.
Depending on your eyesight, you COULD consider an external monitor like video shooters use so you can better see what is happening. SOME CAN BE SET UP FOR FALSE COLOR FOCUS PEAKING.
If you want a fixed focal length lens, something like 35mm will give a nice field of view and a bit more DOF naturally. Wide and fast make focusing easier than long and slow.
Consider how best to set up your camera for impaired vision.
Experiment, Put on a fast wide angle like 35mm f/2, try setting the camera to full auto and take a bunch of pictures. Ill bet you get sharp pictures.
Then try other modes based on your experience and preferred way of working.

In a different way, I sometimes shoot with my daughter who is a wedding and event Photographer. My job is usually to provide " color" shots of people and things, sometimes from unusual angles, while she is getting the money shots. I often shoot with a fast 35mm on full frame with my camera set to BBAF. There are many times I shoot WITHOUT looking through the camera. Since I know the field of view of the lens well, I just point to the middle of the 'frame' I want, touch BBAF & shoot. They are always in focus.
So don't despair, there is a wy to make your camera work for you. Don't give up.

MJ thank you so much for your reply. Great suggestions! I also think I need someone in my area who knows Nikon to help me setup my camera to best meet my needs. I will focus on that next week. A lot of my problems are I have memory problems. I can’t retain what I just read, settings, camera buttons, etc. I just can’t retain new information. All of this makes my photography skills and other things very frustrating. I want to use my great camera and very nice glass so as you said I’m not giving up. As I’m retired I use photography to socialize and to keep busy. It’s also fun. I just got back from a 9 person all women’s retreat in St. Augustine, FL. We rent a big house and stayed on the beach this time. We use local models and have a lot of fun. Things like this make it all worth it. Thanks again for your reply. Betty

My vision was 20/400 30 yrs ago. Probably not as bad as yours. I use a different viewfinder cup to block sunlight. I still shoot events, second shoot weddings, concerts etc. I go thousands of shots without any out of focus. It's probably not the lens and I don't know how much you know about AF modes, adjusting viewfinder brightness on your mirrorless, diopter adjustment, dof control etc. So, my intent is to not be condescending. Simple answers - I shoot with dslr's, d750, d7100. Primarily 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, both Nikon. I actually trust my camera! Shoot manually with high enough shutter speed ie 1/200 and above. Turn on your focus confirmation beep (unless it's intrusive). AF-S,S is the mode that allows the beep. If there is a lot of movement, no beep will be available but AF-C, D9 or S. Low light indoors, same thing with autoISO. Here's a few pics from two weeks ago. I also use my "OK" button from 100% zoom when chimping on image reviw (group shots checking for closed eyes etc).

Do you have a wonderful camera. Auto focus set correctly always works. Auto focus is considerably more reliable than any form of manual focus
