I have a friend who made 100% of her living (a good living) doing Church portraits. She had one set up for her lights and the same settings for her camera the whole time. She had great timing on tripping the shutter and a great skill at getting good smile. Also she could do a great job of selling her pictures. Could she take a good landscape? No! Amateur comes from the Latin word for love and many get great skills doing what they love. - Dave

I left my Nikon D80 in storage long enough for the internal battery to run down. I get an err message and the only way to get it to work again is to have the battery replaced witch would cost more than a used camera on eBay! Nikon could have at least had a warning. - Dave

Just for the record the God of the Muslims is the God of Abraham who just happens to be our (Christians) God too. If he is being worshiped as He would want to be worshiped is another question? Dave

Be prepared to defend your decision to buy new gear. There are naysayers out there who are worried about your finances.

Face it for most more expensive gear will not get better pictures. Special lenses are needed for macro, birding, etc. But just getting what you need is no fun. Get the gear you dream about if you can afford it. You just wont be happy if you don't. Did you ever take a picture with that f/1.2 lens that you could not have taken with an f1/8? But the f/1.2 is sure fun to have. I have a crop frame camera and my 70-200 is a f/4 and does the job. But if I had the cash I would be driving a Morgan +4 and have a Nikon Df on the seat next to me. - Dave

Nixon resigned for one reason. It was that or get impeached. If it would come down to it Obama would too but even with all the yelling and finger pointing from the radical right they know that they do not have a real case to do it. I do wish folks would stop the potty talk and name calling and just try to make their points. - Dave

Are you using both your camera and flash on manual? I use my Vivatar 9300 on my camera using and use flash on auto set to the f/stop I am using on the camera. It works great. Dave

Not correct, the lens has SWM Exclusive (Silent Wave Motor) for high-speed auto-focusing. I am using it on D5100 and autofocus
works very well. Please check the link I provided earlier.

I stand corrected. I was thinking of some other lenses that don't have the motor. I will repent and do better in the future. - Dave

Here's a listing on eBay for a 50mm New Autofocus f1.8 for $100.

This lens will not auto focus on a D3200 it does not have a focus motor and neither does the camera.

Kuzano - Thanks, I was looking at a 35mm 1.8f for $180 - Based on what I have seen, and what you said, I guess that is as good as it's going to get -

The 35 mm might not be the best for you. It is a little short for portraits on a crop camera. You may like the 50 mm better. It will give better blur on your backgrounds if you like that sort of thing. Just because the 50 mm was the one that came with 35 mm film cameras does not make it the best for everyone. I like a narrower view. So try this before you buy. Set your kit lens at 35 mm and take pictures with just that setting for awhile then set it at 50 mm and keep it at that for awhile. Then decide shich you like best and buy it. Unless you like manual focusing make sure the lens you get has a focusing motor so it will work on the 3200. - Dave

$70 is a good buy $90 would be OK. $100 would be high. It is a great lens. It was Nikon's Kit Lens for the D70. One of their first DSLR's. So It is a ten year old lens. It has no focus motor so you have to have one of the higher end Nikon's to have auto focus so most folks that have the higher end cameras are not interested in a Kit Lens. I use it on one of my cameras most of the time. So if you buy it to use it's a good buy but to buy with the idea of making money it is not. - Dave

I was thinking to day about how everyone is Irish on Saint Patrick's Day. We all enjoy it and celebrate with the real Irish. It's to bad we all can't enjoy religious and ethnic holidays with each other. I will wish anyone a Merry Christmas and if someone says have a wonderful wh**ever to me I will enjoy their wh**ever with them. Merry Christmas to all and a pox on all who just say "Happy Holidays" so they wont offend. - Dave

I have been pleased these past few weeks that there appears to be a dearth of photos of grandchildren posted in the Gallery. I am wondering how long our good luck with last. I know I sound Scrooge-like, but Jesus, not many photo subjects are more boring to me to look at than photos of others' grandchildren.
I suppose photos of pregnant bellies have to be right at the top of my list of photos that would gag a maggot. It is truly a canard that women are at their most beautiful when they are pregnant. My least favorite photos to view are those of non-US citizen Muslims walking our streets, breathing our air, sucking up our welfare, I feel for the poor downtrodden female Muslim who suffers each day being married to a Muslim male.
I do hope that you non-Muslims out there have a Merry Christmas and a propitious New Year.
What kinds of photos do I enjoy? Well, I love photos of European castles, ruins of castles, ruins of old buildings, Buddhist Temples, women, scenes depicting the carnage of a recent battle., and many IR photos of landscapes overflowing with gorgeous blooming flowers. I love the skylines and night scapes of Honk Kong and Taipei.
I love photos of first responders saving lives. I love photos of our brave women and men in uniform. They represent the very best of America.

The reading was anti Obama anti Democrat propaganda not Peter Rabbet - like I said he started it. Why is it d********g to point out the facts? If he didn't want his children brought into this mess he should not had used them in his ads. Read the whole article next time. - Dave
