Thank yo for your reply!

The head of the Gitzo tripod is just a 1 3/4" round metal disc with a cork surface and a 3/8" threaded screw in the center. No quick release head. I had one years ago, lost it somewhere. Basically just want a simple, function quick release, doesn't have to be particularly high-end, as long as it does the job.

Greetings,
I recently bought my first mirrorless camera, an Olympus OMD EM-10, and have an old Gitzo 1026 tripod I would like to use. Does anybody have any suggestions on a decent quick-release attachment that would be compatible with both? Having trouble picking one out. Thank you!

Very tempting. Does the camera have WiFi?

I imagine if you are left eyed it would be almost as much of a hassle as th oly. But it's so nice for everyone else not to have to squash your nose anymore

I'm right-eye dominant, but unfortunately have become nearly blind in my right eye over the past few years--retinal detachment. So I'm left-eyed by default, I'm afraid. Maybe the a6000 might be a bit awkward for me. I'm on the fence between that and the Olympus OM D EM-10....but I'm seeing a lot of other attractive options here as well.

Love my a6000 more and more each day. The stabilization and low light situations amaze me. Only complaint is the life of the battery. So I suggest a charger and extra battery and life will be perfect!

I was under the impression that the a6000 did not have image stabilization?

If you would like more info about the Olympus e-m10 do a search for Olympus e-m10 here on this site by coot. It's the 9th item down in the search results.

I read your discussions of the Olympus--looks like Santa was good to you! Really sounds like a great camera. Thanks!

Looking also at the Olympus OM-D E-M10. I like the touch screen.

So after a great deal of consideration with regards to buying my first DSLR, I have decided that for hiking, backpacking, travel and such, a nice, lightweight mirrorless camera might be the way to go after all. I'm looking at the Sony models, particularly the Sony a6000, but I am quite open to other suggestions. Would like to stay in the $500-$600 range, as much as possible, and go with interchangeable lenses and Wi-Fi. Any suggestions, oh fine and helpful citizens of the Ugly Hedgehog community? Still would like a nice DSLR some day , but it can wait.

At the present time you can purchase from Cameta a factory refurbished D7100 with a refurbished 18-55 for $784.90 or the same body with a 18-105 for $894.95. I would recommend the later - it is more versatile and of better quality. And remember that Cameta offers a one year warranty on Nikon refurbished equipment.

I looked into the D7100--very nice camera, but a bit heavy, no touch screen and no WiFi--the D5500 is considerably lighter in weight and more compact, and has both touch screen and WiFi. I like the fact that the D7100 is weather sealed, but apart from that, I think I'm sold on the D5500, which I don't think is available refurbished at this time.

I think I'm going to go with one of the D5500 bundles from Cameta. Wish I could pick and choose my options--I really don't need a tripod, have an old Gitzo 1026 that still serves me well, and the reviews on the Precision Designs telephoto and macro lens attachments I've read, that are offered with the more expensive kits, are less than stellar, but really would like the flash unit and other stuff. Thinking of getting a Sigma 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 DC MACRO OS HSM lens in addition, so don't really need the attachments anyway.

Cameta offers this package, which looks pretty good.

There is a company called "BuyDig" that offers a decent bundle with an 18-55mm lens and wide-angle lens, plus accessories, for $896. They specifically state "Brand New, USA Warranty", and I have seen the site listed on online lists of "recommended sites"--unlike Tri-State, which the more I look into it, they shadier they seem. Has anyone dealt with BuyDig?

Greetings,
Looking to buy my first DSLR camera, probably a Nikon D5500--would like to get a kit with a lens as well. Found a website called "Tri-State Camera" in New York--they seem to have really good prices, camera body with an AF-S 18-55mm lens, and the usual accessories for $718. Does anyone have any experience with this company? Are they reputable? I have found to my frustration that many of the "highest rated" online dealers--B&H, Adorama, and such--also seem to have the highest prices, and don't offer much in the way of bundled discounts. Any suggestions? I don't have a brick-and-mortar camera shop within 100 miles of me, unfortunately.

Thank you. The Olympus EM5 looks like something to definitely consider.

Thank you. I've actually found everybody (else) on this forum to be very knowledgeable and helpful, and have received some really great advice, both on the forum and through messaging. Most people are, basically, good eggs (as my wife would say). I looked at the Canon T5i today and the Nikon D5500--the Nikon seems quite a bit lighter in weight, and the touchscreen overlay is great--also has the advantage of WiFi, which I really like. Definitely leaning towards the D5500. From what I've been told, the Canon T5i is about 3 years old, and the D3300 was made to compete with it directly, but Nikon has moved on with their series a bit faster than Canon on a comparable camera.
