I love the green magnolia jumping spider. Never seen it before. Great pics
I love the colors in these shots. I like the first and the fourth one the most. I looks a little bit rough (pp?). Probably the white strokes on the flower and such. It makes it look a bit like a painting I find.
@Hal
Creepy story Hal, hope I never get bitten by one. I have two as a pet and intend to photograph a lot more of them. I like to get close. The only thing I don't want is to eat one whilst I sleep or for it to get in my ear!
@Albuqshutterbug
That's generous to say :)
I just found out by looking at your Flickr page that the brown spider I photographed is a wolf spider. Maybe a young one.
@Nikonian72
Thx for the advice. It's spot on and clear (again). It'll go on a little note for when I go shooting next time.
Btw, I noticed you edited it with more in depth advice! :)
@naturepics43
Thx!
Hey guys. Thanks for all the tips you gave me last time. I tried to use all of them. The only thing I haven't tried is to add paper towel in my softbox.
I like my pictures with background color. I don't like pictures with a black background. I find them peculiar. Now I do have one thing that I can't grasp yet. Sometimes I'm shooting and it looks fine. Color is coming through, but sometimes I'm shooting from the same spot or general area and all of a sudden all my pics are flash on subject, no or not much natural light and background black :( For example the last two pictures. Not enough light to shoot in natural lighting at faster shutter speed :(
Guess it's the same for everybody. But I've seen pictures shot with natural light at fast shutter speeds, practically same as I do with the flash. Can't figure it out at all. Thanks for watching.
Oooh, I love all the parts of the fly in the first one. And the last shot :)
Great shot. Love the lighting :)
Lovely pictures. I love the first one and the jumper, of coarse ;)
I really like the jumper. Nice focus, great bokeh and the spider is in action.
Hey guys,
Thx all! I'm very grateful for all the replies.
I have to say about the ones with the wasp. I was still shooting at full power with the flash and it was sunny but it was a shady spot.
@naturepics43: Thx man! I'm now using PIE :)
@Nikonian72: Thx for all the tips! I will consider shooting at 1/2 tot 1/4. I already picked up in the forum that I should put the flash diffuser on, which I did.
This is my softbox: http://www.amazon.com/Translucent-Portable-Speedlight-Speedlite-Panasonica/dp/B00ENSKUUK
It is white on the inside, but the only thing I can adjust is opening at the top and bottom, I guess to let out more light. Which I have left closed. Maybe opening them and letting more light go out can diffuse it more? I can't really adjust anything on the inside.
Thx to Douglass & Bill for the rigid support suggestion. I will try something as indeed it's not really rigid. And I've read in the thread you get better results. Well worth the try.
I do have one question about the flash. (I haven't read all the manual as I'm eager to skip and go in the field. But I will finish it). I have a zoom button. I leave that setting at 105 (as my lens is 105). But I'm not sure at what that should be set.
@LoneRangeFinder: I'm from Belgium, so anther brand of kitchen roll will have to do. But I will try. Just stuff some in my softbox I suppose?
@AlicanteBrenda: Heh, I see you also like the bugs. I like you pictures. With 150 topics started you're not a total newbie anymore right.
@Flyextreme: Wait, you're getting too advanced on me. So I've been recommended around 1/2-1/4 power, but you're more of a 1/8 - 1/16 shooter. And by 1:1, you mean without any extension rings. I think my 105mm on my d7000 technically is already above 1:1 I've picked up. But what I picked up by now, is don't shoot at 1/1 :) as with the wasp.
Oh, and I love your pics btw! Hope to get to that level some day. No, seriously, that flicker account ... 8-)
Thx again all, I'm really grateful. Lot's of things to try and hopefully get better shots next time.

One of the nice things about digital photography is you don't need to carry a notepad to record settings. They are all in the EXIF info including the flash settings.
Thank you! Including flash settings?! I can't even find that in Lightroom (or anywhere). I use the YN-560 III with a ttl-cable.

You actually read the rules?!!?:shock: :) ;) Here in the True Macro section, it's pretty much always better to store original, to appreciate detail.....it's almost required :wink:
That makes sense. Don't we all love macro detail. In that case here's the ones I like most.

I do get these weird white points on the high res. I guess it's noise.

The focus on the torso could've been better one this one ..

Thank you. I didn't "store original" as I didn't want to be a burden on the servers. It said in the rules, only if really needed. But I suppose a full res jpg isn't that big..
Hello everybody,
I recently got interested to to macro photography myself. So I lurked around, and found this site with great info on the set to buy.
I now have a Nikon D7000, a Nikon 105mm f/2.8g AF-S VR Micro Nikkor lens, Kenko 68mm extension tubes, a YN-560 III flash and a softbox to go with it.
I haven't taken many pictures, only because I like insects and I'm not so good at finding them yet. These are my first. But I'm looking to get better.
I would love some critics on my composition and pp. general critique on anything would be nice, since I'm only starting out, still have a lot to learn. I have some pictures, and also some without pp. (Feel free to modify them)
If you would like a full res one, just ask. I hope I can attach it in a reply then.

A (feeding) cricket I shot in the garden recently. I seem to have lost the original. I remember I shot it with the tripod, natural lighting.
