Good Grammar, or good taste?

Of course there is mutilation, in your eyes.
But reasonable people can extract what someone is trying to say.
The key there is "reasonable people".
From your little rant, I'd say you need not apply. ;)

If you can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.

I didn't consider it a rant.

I saw a report once that said there's some logic in having misspellings and things in error in the invitation to the scam. You weed out anyone with even half a brain so that you're dealing with real 'fish' for those that respond and seem to be serious in their effort to get involved ...

How many times have you read an article online, in a magazine or newspaper over the last few years where even professional journalists use the wrong grammar or spelling or synonym ( which I think I spelled incorrectly and I am too lazy to look it up) Now think of how many posts--on any internet message board --are a total mutilation of any form of the spoken or written word.. Not all those people can be ignorant enough to fall for the scam, can they?

This scam was posted on another photography board I frequent and the poster said it can come across as totally legit..until that check comes and only then ..if you have a brain cell or ever read the internet..you realize it is a scam. Although as Swan said there are people who fall for these things still. The poster on the other board also mentioned that they threatened legal action. Until the guy holding the fake check said "Great, the people at my bank want to get you to talk to the local law enforcement about check fraud. Send your lawyer to xxxx bank"

Nikon's policy is that if the lens has never been registered and you have the original bill of sale IN YOUR NAME, you can register the camera / lens for the remainder of the warranty. The key in this case is that the bill of sale HAS TO HAVE YOUR NAME ON IT. It can not be a gift or anything like that. NOTE: a cash register receipt will not work. .

Where is this on line to see?
If I go to a store like Best Buy, or even my local camera shop where I bought my first DSLR and two lenses.I got a receipt. That is a legal record of sale. That was it. If I paid cash..there is no credit card record or any other record to have my name listed. And you can't convince me (unless you can point me to the written statement by nikon) that if my family bought me a lens for christmas, I couldn't register the warranty or Nikon wouldnt honor it.

assuming it is like my older body ( d300s) once you have the '4' highlighted, you hit the delete button ( trashcan icon) then pick the '5' out of the symbols above, and use the middle button on the rocker switch (same one you use to center the focus point when you are shooting single focus point) ( input) mine shows me the correct pictographs that correlate with the buttons on the camera back

Maybe the image files were to corrupted and whatever took away that virus had to take the photos too? All I can say is fire the old XP up and just start looking in My documents, my computer, etc .
I still have but no longer use (well once in awhile I break a roll of slide film out of the freezer) my first Nikon that I bought myself as a HS Graduation present, an FE2 black body with a 50mm 1.8. My digital I started with a D300s and then had a good deal handed to me on a used D700 a little over a year after I had bought that.I use the D700 mostly, but I tend to shoot macro with my D300s and if the light is good and I want to go photograph the horses I will use the 70-200 VRII, which was a gift to myself a few years ago, after a VERY stressful winter. I have a stable of lenses, but I think I like my old 35-70 f/2.8D for my walk around. My macro is a Tamron 90mm. I have a too much gear to mention :-)
A side of my family is originally from OH, Dayton area.Surnames were Hochwalt and DeVine.

I need to really learn to hold my camera right.

What's wrong with how you held the camera? Your horizon is straight, you have a nice low angle which helps to accentuate the one horse healh rearing up above the other. Some cropping out of areas that do not add to the picture might improve it, but the holding part looks good

For example, it is often said that cameras should be put into ZipLoc seal bags before bringing them inside from the cold. Bad idea! You can't open the bag and get at the card or battery without letting all kinds of warm moist air into the bag. ..

And that is why some of us take the card out of the camera before they bag it, before walking into the house. Even if the only 'bagging' I am doing is letting the camera sit in my heavily padded, aka insulated, camera bag. That will let it slowly warm up. Of course unlike a previous poster who is in and out shooting, I am a casual photographer.

If the original owner never registered the lens, and you have the original receipt, you might have a chance of getting warranty work done. I have read on other boards that Nikon will honor a warranty even if the product was never registered,( I always thought if you didnt register within so many days of purchase you were S.O.L) as long as you had the BOS.If the original owner never regstered it, no one knows you were not to original purchaser or person the product was 'gifted' to..But no..not transferrable.

They are beautiful birds. Nice shots, especially the 'berry in beak'.
I have read that sometimes a flock will come in and totally wipe out any remaining berries on trees in short order.

Thank you... Shot this in the raw...with the new SLR NIKON D3200 .. I've been out the loop for a little while..sold all my stuff many years ago..I was doing the mommy thing ...but so excited too get started again..

Hmm as someone else stated in another thread..you should be shooting in THE raw in that weather

Very interesting image. I am intrigued as to what the object/material is that the snow landed on? I could see getting even closer and making some abstract images with just that as the subject!

well you have to cover your travel expenses ( gas, milage on your vehicle, food ,- eating out is more expensive than if you were at home, unless you never cook then that cost is a wash-.You have to figure out how to charge for that.Either work it into your final cost or itemize) I assume a hotel for you too unless as Lorianne asked, if you are friends and may be satying with them?.
That plus what your time is worth an hour doing the shooting and processing.Even though drive time is two hr each way,you are staying overnight, so are you doing two sessions with them? One the day you get there and one the next morning? Or is it your choice to go and stay over as oppossed to getting up in the dark and driving there to be at the location for the best light? A lot of people around here have a two hr commute to work every morning so if you can save yourself some cash by getting to bed and rising early to head out, that shouldnt be on the client.

yeah..you are like me..My photos are just in a file called "My Pictures" ( windows XP, and I know ALL about the internet speed thing. And then once they are on my external drives I break them down into subject. Some people use dates ( especially those who shoot events)
Dial up is pretty much my only affordable option here. The cable goes by on the road that the farm sits on..but no one is going to pay to run it the half mile back to the main house or my apartment, and the phone lines were put underground in the late 80's early 90's due to outages every time a hard rain came.No DSL out here. My connection speed is 26.4Kbps..(yes K not M)
anyway.. as far as duplicates if they are all named the same there is program out there I have heard about that can look up duplicate files. I sadly cannot remember the name maybe someone here knows? If you loaded pics onto your computer..then worked on them in Picasa and either IT or YOU renamed them you may have to do it by hand.
As far as the Win 7 computer, I have never dealt with it so the commands may be different, this is what I do on XP---You could make a new file ( right click, New Folder, name it something that you will know this is your MASTER file at this point) and just go through your computer and drag and drop ALL photos into it or copy and paste which ever you are more comfortable with.(If you copy and paste, make sure once you are certain you have them in your NEW folder, go delete them from where you copied them from) Open the folder with all the images, and click on 'view', then 'arrange by' and choose date taken. That way even if you have two images with different names they should be next to each other so you can manually go through and delete copies.
When you download pics from your camera from now on,make a new folder ..I have one named "Nikon Transfer" I use a card reader to download my photos and I just open them , drag and drop into that folder.I then open them up in View NX2 , do a quick nasty sort and delete. I then make sure at least once a week I transfer them onto my external drives, where I set up my own folder system. Atthat point, when I have double checked that my images are back up on both drives, I delete them off my computer.
You could try this on your XP machine too, but I am not sure if teh virus would transfer and then infect your drives and new computer..your homegrown IT pros will have to answer that one!

"Is it SAFE to power it and copy those"

Is there an actual PROBLEM with your PC that you ask if it is safe? Just because XP is no longer supported with updates etc, doesnt mean it will not run or anything can happen if you power it up. I still run an XP machine for my internet and photo work since my internet is dial up and it has a built in modem. Not the greatest set up, but for now that is what I am stuck with.
You could even go to someplace like Best But and get an external hard drive, I have two western digital' my passports', and they plug in to the USB drive, and then they show up under 'my computer' and you can just put your images and any other document on them you want to. Open you image file ( My pictures) ,right click 'explore' and then look for the drive in the file drop down which will be on teh right hand side of your screen. Drag and drop.
as previously suggested, make two copies ( two drives)
Also..go through those images and get any that you couldnt bear loosing printed off by a lab. Even at this point in time, there are no fail proof back ups,( cloud services shut down or crash, drives fail, cd/dvr become unreadable or defunct) and prints, if done with high quality inks, will most likely outlive you.
