No real setup here, just a quick pick in the morning as the sun hit the tops of the trees.

I don't know if anybody asked, but did you turn the VR off?

I tried with and without, just couldn't seem to get a good focus visually using the viewfinder or screen

Another note - I shoot in raw (nef) mode only, not jpg. You will have to tweak your menu options to do that. Also, after I get the shot, I use the free Nikon editing software for a little post processing. I crop it (enlarge) and usually add sharpening to it and maybe a bit of contrast. If it comes out too dark or too light you can use the exposure sliders to compensate for that. Have fun. If you still need help send me a private message.

I shoot in jpg & raw, i only had the jpg files locally for upload in a size that would work so that's what i posted. Wanted to get something up instead of delaying to crop and reduce size (from 15meg)

All, THANK YOU for all the helpful suggestions and feedback. I did post a few of the pics but really want to go experiment with the suggestions on the moon this weekend.

[quote=coj]These are the settings that work for me pretty well - I use a D3300, an 18 - 300mm ED G VR II lens. Set the ISO to 100 (manual mode). f/5.6. shutter speed is 1/400. On the lens, turn off the VR. Turn the lens on M, NOT A/M. Focus the lens perfectly on infinity and do not touch it. Do NOT use auto focus. I usually extend the lens to 300mm, although shorter ranges will work. Use spot metering, single point focus. I shot this image last night (9/28/15). If you like it try my settings.

Greetings happy Hedgehogers! I'm fairly new to DSLR's but have a decent background in video & a fair understanding of concepts. I've recently tried a few (hundred) nighttime shots including last nights eclipse but

coj, that type of shot is exactly what i was hoping for!

A couple of quick comments. For the moon, 300mm is still kind of small. Don't expect to see fine detail when you crop the image. You can only get so much resolution from a given size and power of a lens. To help, you can stop it down a stop or two. Another thing, when shooting the moon (or any astronomical object) you should try to get it as high in the sky as possible. When it is near the horizon, you get a lot of atmospheric distortion, which will soften any image.

Agreed, 300mm isn't optimal but you gotta shoot with what ya got. Looked at some better lenses but got "That" look from my wife. Maybe a christmas item....

Are you using single point focusing?

Yes, set to single point. Tried to make all settings specific to center of pic.

John - With respect, there is no Nikon "D330". There is a "D300" and also a "D3300". It would be helpful to be fairly precise on this forum. Also, be aware there is a very good Search function at the top of this page that you can use to determine if the issue you are describing has been mentioned earlier by other members.

My apologies, it's the D3300

I've tried using the viewfinder as well as the screen to see if one works better than the other. I didn't try setting focus while using a tablet via wifi but it's a good idea. Will post a few of the passable pics tonight.

I'm defiantly using a tripod and giving it time to settle down after setting the shot. I'm also using a remote trigger to avoid any shake while taking the picture.

Greetings happy Hedgehogers! I'm fairly new to DSLR's but have a decent background in video & a fair understanding of concepts. I've recently tried a few (hundred) nighttime shots including last nights eclipse but keep having focus problems. I'm using a Nikon D330 with a Nikon 55-300 (AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR) lens but i'll be damned if i can get a good sharp focus! I've tried auto focus as well as manual but moon shots just never seem to be in focus, i can get "kind of" close but never get a really good sharp image. Is it me or am i just expecting too much out of a low end lens? Turning the lens to fully CCW, nothings in focus, backing off a bit i can get pretty close but just can't seem to get it spot on.

Thanks in advance,
John

Thanks for the comments camerapapi, it's exactly why i posted this here! This is my first foray into digital SLR and and while I understand the basic interaction between aperture and shutter speed i'm really just beginning turning understanding into knowledge. (remember your first manual transmission car? you understood the theory of clutch/shift/gas but spent a week stalling and making the clutch smoke) This feels like it'll be a great hobby, and better to post and learn from those with more experience. Keep it coming!
