Back in film days, I had a Tokina 28-80 zoom, which I thought was great. Somewhere along the way the shutter blades broke and made the lens unusable. How it happened I don't remember. I would buy another Tokina, and I have bidded on some, but so far my digital lenses are 5 Canon, 1 Sigma and 1 Tamron.

How did I do?

I think very well, altho I am basing it on what I learn from others. BTW, I have been moved to photo galley if you want to continue to follow this. Both under "name that flower" and "where have all the flowers gone". Appreciate your feedback and sense of fun, unlike some others who are all about rules.

It has nothing to do with sour grapes. You have made a habit lately of posting pics to the Main Discussion section where they do not belong.

The fact that the Administrator has moved them to the Photo Gallery should tell you something.

Your opinion that you can post to where you think they will get the most views is not relevant. People expect pics to be posted in the Photo Gallery and will look for them there. That should get you enough views to stroke your ego.

It's not about ego, but I can see you have a rigid and inflexible mind. All about following rules, and putting people up against the walls who stray. I didn't mean to spoil your day by not toeing the straight line you have drawn. Have a nice day anyway.

Yes, many sour grapes flourish in this garden of ours.

What in the world makes you think I would know?? But your guess is better than mine.

The contents of the photograph a lot of time would suggest when it was made. People clothings, cars, old style diners etc..

An ironic photo exactly contrary to your observation above is that of Lewis Powell, would be assassin of Lincoln Secretary of State William Seward, while he was in prison awaiting his execution. Taken in the summer of 1865, it has a curiously modern look, as if it could have been taken recently, except for it being in B&W and the antique handcuffs. You can see it in Wikipedia by entering his name.

The visual language you refer to presumably shows itself in things like composition. One thing I would notice is how much consideration and planning went into things like foreground, line of sight, framing and that sort of thing. Casual observers probably don't notice these things much but it's what some photographers identify as being the sort of thing that can lift a photo up a level or two.

Film photography teaches you to be careful with every shot and if that's your background it'll be natural for you to think carefully about composition. On the other hand, quick and easy phone photography probably encourages another type of mentality and people coming from that kind of background probably have to make a more conscious effort to learn about the planning aspects of image capture.
The visual language you refer to presumably shows ... (show quote)

Coming from a film background, I spend a great deal of time on composition, with as sharp a focus as I can get, as my primary concentration. At the start of my day I get a meter reading and set the ISO and shutter speed for what I think are good general purpose settings, then tend to ignore them after I start. I prefer to shoot in Manual mostly, occasionally use Av and recently P, as long as it chooses a good compromise between SS and DOF. My first camera was a Kodak Brownie, where I quickly realized its limitations in fixed SS, F stop and focus. If it was sunny daylight, your subject did not move, and you weren't too close to it, you got a decent picture, otherwise not. Moving to a 35mm SLR later solved those things. But even tho I am now digital and don't have to worry about cost of film and developing, I still find myself spending a lot of time in getting the picture right when I shoot it. I don't do any post processing whatever. I suspect younger people who came up in the digital age spend less time in composition and exposure settings thinking it can be fixed later.

It was mainly a marketing ploy by a third party lens manufacture to persuade the public that their lenses are good lenses and not produced by purchasing their finished lenses from another company, you see, this third party lens manufacture does not manufacture their own glass, they buy it from the lowest bidder and and then they put them into their lenses. The ART lenses are there better line of third party glass they hope to sell to you. They believe by putting the ART before the lens it will prove to the public that the lens is as good or better than a Sony, Nikon, Canon, or even a Fuji lenses.
Don't be fooled by this ploy, the ART lens is still contain third party glass built by the lowest bidder.
Ride with the brand or be left behind.
Brand lenses cost more, but they last longer, stay sharper over their life, and are worth much more at selling or trading in time. Plus Brand lenses are specifically designed to work with your camera brand, they are not manufactured to work with multiple camera brands like this third party lens manufacture.
Good luck and keep on shooting until the end.
You can write rebuttals to this post until you are blue in the face but facts are facts, third party lens manufactures buy their glass from the lowest bidder.

You have totally destroyed my illusions. I thought that if you had an "art" lens on your camera, and took a picture of a bunch of garbage cans, it would come out with the "Mona Lisa". So you're telling me that isn't going to happen??
