Interesting what our brain wants to believe, in spite of our "lying eyes".

It's really all just some simple math.

This article explains how it's calculated and used.

In the old days, both movie cameras and projectors were hand cranked, causing changes in frame rate.

That's why, in the early days of movie houses with the hand-cranked projectors not synced correctly to the film from a hand-cranked camera, they used to call them "flickers"..

This video is one of a series of videos called SMARTER EVERY DAY.

This particular one explains how our eyes and brain work together to smooth out motion through vision persistence.

Very informative.

I have to drive about a hundred miles to get out of the light pollution of the Los Angeles basin, but for you lucky enough to go out in your backyard (makes bathroom breaks much more convenient), and those that have to travel a ways to get dark skies, here is a link to a great site with many tips and examples.

"shotgunning" ( the random replacing of parts ) is the lazy, and usually most expensive, way to fix a problem. I've been a field service engineer for over 45 years and the rule was always to figure it out before replacing a part. Did not happen 100% of the time, but using the right tools, knowledge of the process and test gear, that rule is closely approachable.

And nowadays, we have the luxury of YouTube, which allows us to tap into the thoughts of other people who have most likely had the same or similar issue.

I simply gave an IMHO reply to Jerryc41's issue, based on what I knew and supported by an article that said the same thing.

For some unknown reason, you made it personal.

You made the mistake of poking the Bearcat and got the claws.

Just be nice and I won't have to get rude.

IFF actually stands for IF AND ONLY IF which fits the situation much more correctly than IDENTIFICATION FRIEND OR FOE.

I already actually offered free advice that would have pointed to hardware or software.

But, you evidently had not read it.

Based on your recommendations, you sound more like a person who swaps parts until something hopefully fixes it, without really understanding what's happening by never doing any true diagnostic troubleshooting.

Well, it's quite clear that what you have to say is not important, so you are hereby dismissed.

Take your pills and go to bed.

Okay, moonshine...

"have some think useful too say"

And it's "to" not "too". Learn proper grammar and spelling.

Unless the user changed almost everything in the settings, as you suggest, the BIOS will work well enough to boot to the BIOS screen.

Don't argue with experts. RTFM... I suppose you didn't even read the article I linked. Typical of a mistaken KIA.

I've been building computers since the MS-Dos days, and batteries, even then, were not a major issue, except for keeping time.

I could STILL get a video screen. Once the correct time was entered, it would BOOT up, IFF the drives and back-plane were working properly.

If you're a true computer wiz, you will know what IFF stands for.

The CMOS battery does not prevent an otherwise operating computer from starting up. It is usually just for clock keeping if the computer is un-powered. Read more here, and please read to the end:

IMHO... it's not the battery.

Could be hardware, could be OS.

One way to check which is to try to run another OS from the DVD drive... preferably Ubuntu or Mint, both Linux distros that, if they boot up will allow you to look at your hard drive and see if anythings odd. If the Linux boots up, your basic processor, video and other peripherals are working. If not, you have an issue with hardware, and based on previous posts, sounds like a power supply.

If you want to make a bootable Mint Linux DVD, go here:

https://www.linuxmint.com/download.php

and download the Cinnamon desktop in the 32 bit or 64 bit version. It's an ISO file and your DVD writer should be able to write it to a DVD quite easily. You may want to try it in your working computer first to get a feel for how it looks when it boots up. Just pop it in the DVD drive and power up or restart. You may have to press a function key to get the boot menu to boot from DVD.

It's a cheap way to pinpoint the problem, before you take it apart, reload or repair.

Good luck.

When the special effects get in the way of the story, it's not a good thing.

A lot of work, back then, but they figured it out, and we got to enjoy the illusion.

Kodak developed a lot of stuff.

In order to come out of bankruptcy, they sold off a lot of their patents in 2013 for a reported $525 Million, to companies like Apple, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Microsoft, Samsung, Adobe Systems and HTC.

Their influence still exists. Even my fairly recent DSLR has a "Kodachrome" setting that produces the warm tones known for the film of that name. People that see that color palette automatically believe it's from an "old" film camera.

A bit of Kodak trivia... Kodak, since about 1974, had a privately owned Nuclear Reactor in the basement of one of their headquarters buildings.

It's existence didn't become public knowledge until 2006.
