Planning a trip to White Sands in NM in early October. Any suggestions regarding use of a filter? If a filter is recommended how many stops? Thank you, Cliff

Remember the sensor want to average the light to 18% gray.Mathis could decrease the intensity of the sand. When I have photographed snow,I shoot aperture priority and brack the aperture open 0.7 stops for three shots. Look at the results and use that.

Ps owning a gun at 18?
Silly.
My friends and I all had guns at 8 years old and none shot anyone or committed a crime with one.
But I agree that any crime committed with a gun involved should be dealt with severely. I prefer a mandatory death sentence within 30 days of conviction.

Can’t rent a car until 25, can’t purchase a gun until 25. Can hunt and target shoot but only when supervised by legal gun owner.

You had a gun at 8 but were supervised by your parents.

Will be traveling to these places in February...would appreciate any and all suggestions regarding settings for both regions...also night photography of the milky way. I will be using DX Nikon D7000 with a nikon 24-70 f2.8 and a manfretto tripod 190 go ..also suggestions for any other lenses...dont want to overpack re equipment...thanking all in advance

At Tatio geyser field you will arrive before or just at sunrise. It will be about 20 degrees F. The best pictures are at sunrise so you need f stop of 5.6 or lower and an ISO that gives you the picture you want. Smaller apertures and longer exposures can yield interesting picture.

As for the Milky Way, it may not be visible. We were there in early March and the Milky Way was not visible. If you are staying at Explora, they have a skilled photographer who can solve that for you.

So why are pro cameras predominantly automatic with manual thrown in as an afterthought like the Z9.
Auto advance in several speeds. auto focus in several modes, auto shutter, auto aperture , auto everything, auto ISO.

Manual is not an afterthought. Besides being a learning tool, it does have several application. One of my favorite is star streaking. Shutter priority, aperture priority are a convenience. Auto ISO assure proper exposure in concert of the mode. Modern cameras are very good in low light allowing Auti ISO to assist the photographer. Shooting in Auto mode may give you shutter or aperture settings that may not give you the best photo.

Why not teach how to focus? How to compose? If you can't do those things, who cares what exposure mode you used?

Well there are issues of depth of field, bokeh, rule of thirds and how and when to break them.

If the person is serious then learning manual would be ideal then choose the mode best for them sports -shutter priority, landscapes - aperture priority, animals and people - usually aperture but sometimes shutter.

Auto is for those who just want a picture

Falsifying business records is indeed a misdemeanor. That is, unless it was falsified in connection with another crime, such as fraud.
I'm sure you know more about law than the NYC DA.
Are you licensed to practice law in NY or are you just parotting what Tucker Carlson said?

When the DOJ, state DA of NY, Bragg’s successor, and even Bragg himself said there was nothing there. Then Bragg tries to twist a misdemeanor into a felony.

While not licensed to practice law, I trust Garland, the Democratic state DA, and previous Democratic NYC DA who are licensed.

Similar cases like John Edwards and Hillary Clinton went nowhere. BTW I never watch Tucker, Hannity or Ingram. Don’t watch Levine either

Well, I wouldn't be so sure about the statute of limitations in New York.
To clarify: The statute of limitations in New York State for a felony is five years.
However, the statute of limitations doesn't count the time that the accused has lived out of state. In Trump's case, you might remember, he lived in Washington DC, in that big white house for four years and then moved to Florida. None of that time counts toward the five-year statute.
Hence, He can still be charged with the crimes that the New York Grand Jury is hearing now.

Trumps formal resident was NYC until he left after his Presidency. He v**ed in NY in 2020. The original issue was a misdemeanor with a 2 year SOL. Bragg is trying to twist this to a felony. Most legal scholars express that this is a reach too far. It was a t***saction between his lawyer and him. Trying to twist this into involving campaign funds is a stretch.

Not going to happen, Bragg's case is a nothing burger, even if he is able to get a first conviction by having a NYC jury of "Franks" it will never stand through the appeals process.

True. Statute of Limitations ran out years ago. Should be dismissed at any arraignment. DOJ, NY state dropped the case as Bragg did originally, but Bragg has higher aspersions.

I understand the triangle, ss, aperture, iso and use LrC/Ps for post, shoot raw, with D850 or D500, pretty well.

I shoot for fun, but like sharp images, nicely composed. Lens choices are 50 1.8,24-70 2.8; 300 pf 4, 70-200 2.8; 80-400 4.5-5.6 and 105 2.8 macro. Have TC1.4

Sounds like you’re a Nikon user. Auto ISO works well especially with my D4s. Result are good with my D750, but slightly less
Will visit Costa Rica in June, and wildlife may be static, but need be ready for the 'cute movement shots, in varying light conditions.

I've not experienced the jungle light conditions, normally shoot wildlife in better lighting, but I'm studying how to optimize sharp, with noise that I can improve, use auto ISO or set a button to increase ss/iso as soon as movement starts. I can Pano merge landscapes with the very lightweight 50mm, if compelling or simply go for the wildlife.

I'll take the 105 for macro and a flash.

I can't afford/justify a 600 mm F4 (it's a hobby), and not that interested in the 200-500.

So, that said:

Maybe my light concerns aren't something to worry about?

Maybe use off-camera flash, but that has hand, speed and distance limits?

Maybe the 70-200 with or without the tc 1.4. but i give up a lot of reach, gain aperture vs 80-400.

I like the 300, but it's fixed.

Any references, YouTube videos or tricks, thoughts are welcomed.

I use a cotton carrier while hiking.

Thanks,

Bill

My reference will be lenses for interchangeable lens cameras only.
I have experience with Canon ILC equipment only. Feel free however, to comment on Nikon, Sony, aftermarket and other OEMs as well.
Zoom lenses have become excellent in terms of IQ in the last couple of decades. With the shorter ratio zooms, certainly down to 3:1, possibly 4:1, most images are useable even up to very large prints. Certainly low light impacts IQ. The extremes of range, sometimes at one end, sometimes at the other, often at both ends, IQ is mildly impacted. At zoom ranges greater than 4:1 I have not been happy with IQ.
What is your experience?

I’m Nikon and don’t go beyond 3:1 in any lens. Occasionally, use a 2x teleconverter at 200 mm never happy. If you need more than 200 mm look at Tamron or Sigma lenses, high quality, much lower prices.

The so called newbies have probably already been using a phone for pictures for a long time. They didn't start with a dedicated camera. You may even have a hard time convincing them that they can do more with a camera than a phone. But if you can convince them to try a dedicated camera, I would suggest leaving them in their familiar territory of automatic exposure etc. and then point out other options to them as time goes on.

Agree. If they get interested then they can learn modes, BBF, depth of field, raw and editing. They may just want to take photos for fun with more range than a phone.

What are the chances that this film might still be good? A friend brought it to me to see if I could use it and I don't have a single film camera left.

My friend has undergone surgery to remove a large brain tumor and he needs to sell this if at all possible. He doesn't own a film camera now either.

This is not the kind of film I used many moons ago, so I don't really know anything about it. I will check for expiration dates if anyone is interested.

I really would like to sell it for him if it will bring anything at all, plus shipping. If anyone wants to take a chance on it, please let me know and make a bid on it.

The easiest way to tell is to find a film camera and shoot a roll. Get it developed.
