Opportunity has presented itself for a coworker needing senior photos for her daughter. She likes the sports work I do.

Gear and knowledge I have, just not sure of pricing, could lead to lot's of referrals,as her daughter is very popular.

Thanks in advance

Currently I have a speedotron studio lighting set using umbrellas I purchased speed rings with the hope of someday getting a good set of soft boxes

I ran across an opportunity to purchase some Paul Bluff softboxes that would work however I don't know if the speed Rings will transfer to them any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Fellow Hoggers

For years I have utilized multiple portable hard drives to have all my photos backed up. A friend recently mentioned Carbonite, and I was wondering everyone's thoughts.

Thanks in advance

A quick thanks to all. Allow me to further explain, the work I am doing is for a non profit singing group of which I belong. I had been taking photos of the contest and conventions as part of my hobby and was recently asked to become the designated photographer. To help further perpetuate the group and and promote our singing style (barbershop harmony) I needed to develop a plan to provide now posed photos for publication and general viewing. The previously hired photographer did not have the heart and was deemed to be taking advantage of the situation and canceled his contract. A little more to it than that but I was asked to step in at the last minute. Task accepted and a quick contest was shot, but now a plan is set to be put in place providing these photos a t a minimal cost. Basic structure for this group is proposed at hotel room for nights required and $.30 per mile one way over 150 miles. The balance billed as an expense. Thanks to all who responded.

Hello forum members

I am slowly entering the field of charging for my services after years of non profit work as a serious hobby. I was approached by an organization to cover their conference over several days. All they are needing are the files on a flash drive and to make then accessible for there membership. The event starts on a Thursday evening awards dinner then conferences and tours Friday and Saturday. There will several breaks in between all events and the locations are easily accessible. I proposed a min rate of 75.00 an hour with a 2 hour minimum on Thursday and 100.00 an hour on Friday and Saturday. I also offered to close out the conference on Sunday for no charge.

Any thoughts or suggestions

Thanks in advance

I have three cameras, namely my iPad, a Sony point & shoot, and my Nikon 7000 with three lenses. Family stuff is done with the first two and "serious stuff", at least to me, is done with the Nikon. I find it very versatile and it has met my needs for two years. And I keep discovering more ways to use it.
I also have two books that help me get the most out of it.

I also have the D700 and I am learning everyday, what books are you referring to? Inquiring minds and all.

Does anyone know where I can find the durable dark gray/black foam that is used in most cases. I have found a storage container on wheels that I am trying to use for my studio gear.Any ideas?

That is truly great equipment, but it is old technology and has been superseded by several generations where portability is needed. They are very power hungry and the capacitors really put out a punch. I hope you aren't planning on moving them around.

Although I don't plan to travel with the gear, however twice to three times a year there will be the need to set up to take large group shots of multiple choruses and quartets in a static location, otherwise the gear will stay setup in my theater /photo/play room where it will be used primarily for family and friends. If this were to lead to a second part time income I may look to use lighter weight portable equipment. Any thoughts on alternatives to travel with would be appreciated.

Looking at your "Lighting Newbie" title, I didn't expect to see the word Speedotron being used. It's not newbie equipment for sure. I used to use Speedo packs back in the film days when doing large & medium format work. Even took it on location. Three hernia operations later, I mostly use speedlights.
The first thing I did back then for location shoots was locate the breaker box. They aren't exactly power-friendly units, and not very intuitive to use, though the dial-down one you have was a lot easier to use than the older ones. Not sure if yours has an issue and it's been too long for me to remember how to check.

With big group shots, and assuming you don't cause a black-out, the power of the Speedotron will probably come in handy. I rarely used umbrellas with those, preferring lightboxes (easier to control spill), but I don't recall ever doing a group shot with them. Besides softboxes, you can use honeycomb grids of various angles to narrow the light beam or even an optical spotlight to really highlight something.

I spoke with my camera guy he did ask me to bring it in he will check it out based upon the information provided we believe it is a power issue in my home but will have It checked out. With that being said I want to make sure I don't embarrass myself on a shoot. I wanted to be able use my bonus room to do portraits of the grandkids, hopefully I won't have to rewire the room to do so

The finding of this forum has brought me a wealth of ideas and newfound knowledge, to which I thank all who have posted. I recently acquired from a retiring photographer the following lighting equipment

*Speedotron 2403-B Dial down pack
* three Speedotron 102 heads with modeling lights, reflectors, and cables
*two 25' extension cables
*three 13' lighting stands
*Quantum 4i wireless remote with sync cable

The package was purchased for what I considered a good deal for 700, herein lies the questions, I have downloaded the users manual but I am having trouble with the pack tripping the breaker in my home. At some point I hope to be using this equipment for large group photos of a non profit group that I am a member of (don't want to embarrass myself). Is there a need to have the unit checked out , or is there any tips on using the power pack. Also any thoughts on using umbrellas and the best types and or size, soft boxes etc.

Someonr previously suggested to me the Strobist blog and I am pivking up alot of info there as well. Curious if there is anyone with firdthand experience with this equipment.

Thanks in advance
