It does take up space, but I find that not that much space that I cannot justify ease of workflow with best file format available. Memory is pretty cheap and I have not run out of space yet. I use two 128 GB cards in each of my Z9’s, second card set as overflow. I have never hit the overflow to the second card yet. This is not to mean that others will not, I have not. So, personally, the way I shoot, it is not an issue for me.

You own four 128GB CFexpress(B) cards and still think memory is pretty cheap? Wow!!! I need to talk to your stock broker! 😇

I shoot plain vanilla RAW without any issues whatsoever. Easy workflow.
RL

Uncompressed RAW takes up a lot of memory, no?

Been shooting my Z9 since I got it (Jan) with no problems - I shoot it in HE* raw file format with no issues and process my files in LR Classic on my iMAC. If I were you I'd contact Adobe Tech Support for some help. It shouldn't be a problem. They have always been my experience very helpful.

Great idea to contact Adobe Tech Support. Why didn't I think of that? Duh! Thank you.

HE* works perfectly with Lr Classic and a iMac PRO, at least for me. Both are the very latest versions. Best of luck.

Thank you. I am using a Windows 11 PC, but I'll give it a shot. Perhaps I'll try HE* and Lossless for a few bursts to make sure.

Here's a work-around.
Download NX Studio from Nikon - it's free.
Open your High Efficiency files in NX Studio and then export them as tif files. See if Lightroom Classic can read the tif files - I expect that it will. Affinity Photo still cannot read the High Efficiency files but can read the exported tif files from NX Studio.
I'm shooting in Lossless Compression so that I don't need to do the extra step, but will switch to High Efficiency when Affinity Photo can read them.

Thanks for the advice. Seems a bit awkward for me, but I appreciated your giving this issue some thought.

I had tried both Lossless Compression and HE* and have not had any problems with Lrc or PS under win 10.

Good to know. Thank you.

I've tried Lossless and High Efficiency* and haven't noticed anything...so it's just the High Efficiency that's giving you problems? Have you tried the others (HE is the low end of the offerings).

Thank you for the reply. I have been using Lossless without encountering any difficulty. The problem is supposedly only with High efficiency* - and I have been hesitant to try it.

Hello friends. Apologies if this issue has been addressed before, but could somebody kindly explain the nature of the incompatibility between Lightroom Classic and Nikon Z9's "High efficiency*" setting for RAW compression. Has the incompatibility been resolved - and, if not, when can we expect Adobe to come up with a fix? Thank you.

Hello friends. My walkaround lens is the Nikon Nikkor AF-S Zoom 28 - 300mm F/3.5-5.6. It hardly ever leaves my camera. And it's been that way for years. Problem is ... lately the HB-50 lens hood keeps falling off the lens because the bayonet mount no longer clicks tightly. I tried replacing the lens hood with another HB-50, but the same thing happens - so I suspect the problem lies with the nubs on the lens itself rather than with the lens hood. My fix has been to purchase a screw-in lens hood, which works fine but is bulky in my bag because you can't "reverse" it. So I repeatedly screw and unscrew it, but that takes time and will likely wear down the threads. Any thoughts about what to do about the bayonet mount? Thanks so much.

Hi hogs. Do any of you have experience purchasing equipment from Abe's of Maine? Their website lists the Tamron 100-400mm F/4.5-6.3 VC USD for Nikon at $599, which is $200 less than Adorama, etc. Free shipping, no tax, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Addendum -

Oops. I posted before I used the board's search function. Duh. Apologies.

Even if I checked and packed well, my wife would still tell me I was wrong.

Now there's a coincidence. Two hogs married to the same gal! Who'd have thunk??!!

Thanks to you and all who participated in this thread for your great advice!

Perhaps the OP needs to check with the tour company. Even if only one of the flights limits in cabin camera size, it could be the one flight that matters most.

Thank you for the excellent suggestion, dsmeltz.

I checked. Maximum carry on for flights within Africa on this Great Migration tour is only 11 lbs. We can take an additional 33 lbs. in checked baggage, but that's it.

My current plan (seems to be changing almost daily) is to take a Tamron 100-400mm lens on my D810, which will give me 600mm reach in crop mode, and carry a Panasonic Lumix ZS100 in my pocket as a back-up and also to pull out when I want a focal length less than 100mm.

More thoughts always appreciated.

"Please do not go without a backup ...."

I agree without reservation. I would take both bodies, they are both strong and will complement each other. On the last drive of the last day my 70-200 lens became inseparable from my backup D810. Never could manage to release it myself and had to send it off for service. Had that happened on day one I would have been shafted. Stuff happens. And Africa is an above average rough trip in the vehicles. We laughed that some drives it felt like we were filming the opening scenes of Rat Patrol. If you know what that show is about you are on the far side of youth like me.
Make it a point to be in the field for every sunrise and sunset. They are magical in Africa. Eat and sleep when you come home.
And consider renting a lens if you do not have what you want in your tool bag. Lensrentals.com works pretty seamlessly.
"Please do not go without a backup ...."... (show quote)

Yup. I remember Rat Patrol well and will definitely heed the advice from you and @imagemeister regarding a backup. Thanks.
