I currently shoot with a Canon T3i and have 3 lenses; 75-300 f/4-5.6, 18-55 and 50 1.8 I have been looking at the 7D Mk II. There are also a few lenses that I have been looking at, all of which are Canon; 200mm f/2.8L II USM, 24-70mm f/4L IS USM and the 70-200mm f/4 USM. Decisions, decisions. Which would you upgrade first? I feel like I am outgrowing the camera but at the same time, I want new glass lol. Getting both is currently not in my budget.
Thanks in advance, Dan

I will definitely be watching this, thank you!

What you are asking about is to expose correctly for the sky and then add enough flash to illuminate the subject to match...right?

Excellent video with Joe Brady demonstrating how to do it.

Thank you. That is one of the problems that I am having in Manual is being able to adjust the compensation. I have no problem with doing that in Aperture Priority but I'm not even sure if it's possible in Manual (lol). I have been using my flash off camera by triggering it with my pop up flash. Do you think that could be ruining it?
Do you shoot with back or front button focusing? If back, what is yours set to? Also, which (in camera) metering is your camera set to?
Thanks again

Try this, I do it like this. Manual mode, ISO - Auto, f stop 2.8 or wide open, shutter speed 1000 of a second or decrease your compensation 1 or 2 full stops. This will increase your shutter speed. Your flash should be approx. +1 this will vary according to your desired brightness on your subject. If you can take your flash off of your camera with pocket wizards or some equivalent. This will darken background, make bluer skies and improve your overall image appearance. Give it a try.

Thank you, I will give that a shot. Sorry for my lack of knowledge but what is the equivalent to f/16 on a speedlite? I am pretty much completely new to lighting.
Thanks again

Here's a starting point.

Set your shutter to a speed compatable with your speed light - let's say 1/125, and your f-stop to properly expose your background with the ISO you've chosen - f16 @ ISO 125. ('sunny 16' rule, for outdoors in the sunshine)

Now, set your speedlight power & distance to subject so that the speedlight exposure is also f16. Or maybe a bit less, so the flash isn't 'overpowering.'

Check your results & adjust as necessary.

I just got a speedlite (430ex II) and I am trying to figure out how to expose for the background in manual. Is this possible or would I need to switch over to AP? Also, how exactly do you "expose for the background" to keep skies blue and not under expose your subject? Since I got my camera I have been shooting with AE/AF, no AE lock. I switched it the other day to AE lock/AF. Could that be playing a role in this (no AE lock)? I am so very confused!

Thanks in advance,
Dan

I just got the 430ex II about a week ago, trying to learn. I used the pop-up flash to fire the off camera.
I'm thinking the shadowing in the second photo might be a little hard.

First photo:
f/16
1/200s (not sure if I had high-speed sync on or not)
ISO 100
Canon T3i - 430ex II

Second photo:
Only thing I changed was the f stop to f/18

Not sure how to tell (or if you can) what the flash was fired at.

Thanks in advance.

Either buy new from a reputable dealer or used from same. Avoid ebay or "bargain priced stores" as there are fake Canon flashes from China being sold that do not work like the original but look real.

I was planning on it. I'm thinking Best Buy, it's local, they have it in stock and I won't have to wait for shipping. Whenever I purchase online I always look up reviews on the store/seller.

If you are learning to use flash, I suggest you go canon. Simply because any issues you may have while learning will be within how canon flashes and cameras interact.

Using a third party flash introduces the possibility of an incompatibility from witch no one can help you.

If you know how flashes work and are comfortable using them, then a third-party flash will save money and probably be fine.

I have never used a flash, I'm wanting to learn flash photography. I'm thinking I will stick with the Canon. Thank you and thank you to all of you as well!

I have been looking at the Canon 430ex II and had my heart set on getting that. I have been seeing a lot of good reviews on the Yongnuo 568ex II and now I'm not sure which one to get.
Anybody have any experience with either?
Either of them work off camera?
Pros and cons for both?

Thank you!

It just started doing this today though. I always lift the pen and when I apply again it picks up where I left off.
Wendy2 wrote:
That is normal. The effect builds every time you apply the pen.

When I lift my pen while dodging and burning and then continue to D&B it will go over the areas that I already did, making them brighter and darker. Did I change a setting somehow?

How do I remove the lanyard from the pocket? I tried cloning it out but it doesn't seem to be working very well. I kind of really want it out of the shot.
Thanks in advance,
Dan

Camera is up to date on firmware. I downloaded the old version of ML 2.3 which it said to download/install first. It would never install. I downloaded the Canon firmware to my SD card with the ML on the card (the notes said to do that if there were any problems). Both of them came up in the update but the ML still wouldn't work. Both my card and card reader work fine. I did a jailbreak on my iPhone and iPod in the past and both worked perfectly. I'm pretty computer savvy, if I wasn't comfortable doing it, I wouldn't do it.

OK. Technology can sometimes do that. Maybe a corrupted download or a bad card or card reader or something.

Do you have the correct f/w on your T3i? - V1.0.2 I think....

Are you using the original 'stable version v2.3' or the latest builds? They can be a different situation since they are untested products of a continuous development process. If you are not familiar with computers and development then you may need to take a deep breath and proceed with caution. YMMV. This is not production or supported software, but the right versions do work very well and without trouble.

Mine has been trouble free and I haven't heard of a significant number of issues ( like exactly 0 other than yours) so it could be worth trying again.

It is important to follow the instructions exactly to the letter. If it doesn't work there may be some other problem. If you are not making notes of what the errors are, you may need to question why you are even considering an unsupported hack. It is not very likely to damage your camera if you do everything properly, but it could, and the ML guys make that very clear. They are not responsible and you get to keep all the pieces.

I think ML is a good thing, but if you are not computer savvy it may not be the best thing for you.

Up to you.

Good luck....
