This is my first post in this section. It seems a better fit than in the Photo Gallery. The Droste effect describes a specific type of recursive picture in which a smaller version of the larger image is featured within the larger image. In theory, the picture in picture effect continues deeper into the picture ad infinitum, but it really only goes as far as the image resolution will allow while still being visible, but it still has the feeling of being never ending.
The advent of the digital age has taken the old Droste effect to a whole new level. Most of the images attached here were created in PhotoShop. Some were also enhanced with Generative fill before the Droste Effect was applied. There are numerous tutorials on YouTube or the Adobe site for creating the Droste effect. The last two images were created in a stand-alone program called PhotoSpiralysis. PhotoSpiralysis is available at both Mac and PC app stores.

The term Droste comes from a Dutch cocoa tin featuring a woman holding a smaller version of the tin on a tray.

The Droste effect is effective when applied to architecture with evocative elements such as leading lines.

If the original image contains a picture frame, it is a good candidate for Droste treatment. I've titled this image, "Studying the infinite wit and wisdom of Bob Dylan."

This image contains a screen shot of the layers applied in PhotoShop.

This image was made exclusively using PhotoSpiralysis. The app has some drawbacks, it does create the spiral effect rather effortlessly.

Staircase make excellent shots for Droste treatment. This image was also created in PhotoSpiralysis.

Interesting, I really like the first one. What did you use to make the pencil sketch.

Thanks for looking and asking! Photoshop does it all. The process is basically select the subject of the sketch on the original put on a new layer. Add a black and white filter if original is color. Make a copy of that layer and invert it, change the blend mode to color dodge. Add a Gaussian blur filter and adjust to desired effect. Add a layers filter and adjust the blacks if you think it necessary. Make a snapshot layer, (Command-Option-Shift-E), Add Noise filter and adjust to desired effect.

There are many more detailed tutorials on YouTube. It's pretty straightforward.

I have been experimenting with turning color images into BW pencil sketch style. Here are two of my more successful results with the before and after photos. Civil comments and constructive criticism warmly appreciated.

The suet and berries from my Oregon grape bush has been attracting a lot of attention from the avian community. Here are three from the other day.

As a kid I found a young racoon that had lost on of it's legs. Brought it home fed and cared for it while the leg healed. Zeke became a household pet, very affectionate. The problem was they are nocturnal animals and Zeke would wonder the house all night and get into everything that was not stored. Eventually he joined his friends in the wild. For a short time he would come back for a visit. A wonderful experience.

Thank you for sharing this story. It is good to read something positive about these intelligent and curious creatures.

Adorable creatures and you did a great job of capturing a special moment in time. I always try to keep in mind that we have invaded their habitat, they have not invaded ours. We must learn to share our Planet with other lifeforms for it will be a sad day when mankind is the last species standing.

Can raccoons be destructive to our homes at times? Yes, they can. Can humans be destructive to their homes? Absolutely and we continue to do so for we believe that we have the right to do it.

Thank you for your perspective and comments. I agree. Whatever damage raccoons have done to human structures, I know of no case where they have killed humans and turned them into articles of clothing.

A raven stopped by. I was lucky enough to have my camera close by for some shots of a big, beautiful bird.

I was sitting on my back deck with my camera recently when Ma Raccoon and her two kits came up for a drink of water. I stayed calm and quiet. Ma looked at me and made a low sound that seemed to communicate, "I appreciate the water, but if you mess with my kits we will have a problem." I remained still and took some nice close ups. Here are the results.

My personal favorite blur tools in Photoshop are the field blur (Filter>Blur Gallery>Field blur,) and the Depth blur beta filter under neural filters.

If you want a realistic looking depth-of-field type blur, the depth blur is great. It finds your subject and keeps it sharp while allowing you to set the focal distance, focal range and blur strength.

Field blur lets you set pins wherever you want a blur and then allows you to adjust the strength in just that area. Great for creating cast shadows...

Thank you for the specific advice. I know what PS tool to experiment with next!

I have been playing with the blur tools in Photoshop. Here are some of my more successful images IMO. Selection of the subject is critical to making the photo work. Any comments or suggestions are warmly welcomed.

I have been playing with Photoshop’s new AI generative fill feature. Some of my results were impressive, many were underwhelming, to say the least. Here are a few examples of the better results IMHO. The first two sets were of a guitarist taken at a local Farmer’s Market. I used generative fill to complete the guitar and change the background. The third is of a woodpecker. I changed only the wooden railing to a tree branch. Civil, thoughtful commentary and constructive criticism is welcome. Open the pod door, Hal.

I recently digitized my old film photos. Among them were a number taken at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The first two are of the wall itself, one in B&W, the other in color. The third image is a composite of several photos. For me it evokes the astonishment and joy evident at the time. I hope it also shows the persistence and character of the German people in eventually breaking through. Apparently, this event inspired V. Putin, a KGB officer in East Berlin at the time, to pursue his dream of restoring the Russian Empire and leading to the invasion of Ukraine.

Comments and constructive criticism are always welcome.

I got a nice shot of a varied thrush and wreath which I enhanced a bit with Photoshop. I think it is festive, certainly seasonal.
