Hi again Natgrani, I don't necessarily post a photo for a "nice response" but for accurate and informative feedback. I believe too many people on this forum are afraid to give constructive criticism.

Nice may not have been the best word. I should have said informative response regarding the photo. There are many constructive replies and good information here. I’ve seen replies that are so critical the poster leaves the forum. I enjoyed viewing your photo.

Please forgive me. I'll try to do better.

I will, too. Thank you. If one posts a photo hoping for a nice response, it’s like a shot of cold water to the face to get a critical grammar slam. In my humble opinion.

Nice shot! But ----"A evening shot"??? You are far from the only one using "A" for "An" and it makes me wonder why. It is on this forum that I started noticing this misuse of "A" and "An" which has nothing to do with photography - LOL.

Then why address it? It’s Photography, not an English critique.

What is a good way to learn to fully use all the features of a "real" camera? I bought a used Canon D60 and a Tamron 18-270 mm lens. I'm OK with the automatic features (turning the top left knob CCW (counter clock wise) from "fully automatic, but clockwise features are a mystery.

I'm not good at learning from the manual, or other books. I have trouble following Utubes/video tutorials. I have learned other things when I have a knowledgeable person with me to ask questions.I am considering visiting a camera club, and looking for an introductory course at a local college or Leisure Learning course. I live in the north suburbs of Houston.

Thanks, David B

Howdy from the south side of Houston: I have several books, tutorials. I attended a Jr College photo class. The more experienced dominated the teacher with questions. As a last resort I went to a camera store and asked for a one on one help. It isn’t cheap but it saves correcting mistakes later. You might also find photo students who can always use a few dollars. Try Best Buy or Fry employees in the camera dept. Best of luck.

This Pacific 4-6-2 was built as a passenger locomotive. "She" ran severalr The train routes across the U.S. but spent most of her time in Texas. This engine was in service until 1952. This steam engine burned fuel oil, not coal.

Everyday around noon, a similar locomotive and railcars came through town. My Gramps would look at his pocket watch and tell me it was time to go. We drove the few blocks to the crossing and parked roadside. As the train approached, the engineer would blow the whistle and wave to us. I like to think he was as glad to see us. Thank you for letting me relive this special memory. I was about 5 at the time.

I'm going to travel the 12 hours to Oregon to see the eclipse and all I'm taking is a LAWN CHAIR!!!
Don't get me wrong, I will do photography all the way up and some of the way back.
I was south of La Paz, Baja for the 7 minute eclipse of 91 and if was a rewarding experience without a camera!
I'll be there to experience to solar wind, the fleeting shadow, the diamond ring and seeing the planets come out.
Nat Geo would do a better job than I will anyway!

I hope you will post your experience here for those of us who weren't there. I could not find lodging from Oregon to the east coast and I'm too old to hike and dry camp. Enjoy your trip.

in what universe do people use the terms "D" and "G" to describe lenses, and others understand what is being said???

The poster is a beginner. If you don't understand, move on. It's very intimidating to ask a question and get a response such as yours. There are so many knowledgeable people on this site that go out of their way to help newbies. Don't spoil it for the ones that are trying to learn.

That isn't what they were testing, basically it was the point and shoot capabilities of the various camera's just the defaults. A what if you do nothing but press the shutter button test pretty much.

Everyone who claims some degree of photographic skill will have idea's on how to make the camera take better photographs but what looks better to one doesn't to another. The tests shouldn't mean much to photographers, after all who is shooting this way.

If there is something to be learned it's that you should be using the raw capability of your camera if you want better than the default. E.g in the comments of the video someone said that 3 different film emulations in the fuji would have produced better results. If the shots had been taken as Raw files then these 3 emulations would have been available in post processing (i'm assuming fuji provides software which replicates the in camera options as most manufacturers software does).

Maybe manufacturers choose less than optimal default settings so photographers can feel better about themselves when they improve on them, certainly would be demoralizing if all the changes made the image worse. How good are the lens supplied with the camera? The more expensive bodies probably have better lenses, than camera's designed to be competitive on price.

Another point might be the target audience Japanese skintones are pretty different to German skin tones and that may reflect in the photographs for paler skin usually a touch of toning down of the reds and oranges helps a lot.

I am one of the new ones here, and I've gotten great pleasure reading all of your postings. I do need help however. I would like to get more serious about my photography and want to know what you would advise. Right now we have a home PC that I we share. I have always loaded my photos onto this computer and I have multitudes. Some I have put on memory sticks just to creat room. What would be involved in having a set up just for my photography? I am no IT person, but I feel if I had my own equipment for editing and only photo work, this would help me out a lot. Everything else in our life goes on our computer right now, paying bills too. Any advise?

I don't know your level of expertise but when I began, I found a young person very knowledgeable in computers and photography and hired him to help me at my home. Some college persons usually like picking up a little extra cash and I learn best by visual and hands on. The UHH contributors are also the best.

I find it curious that the very people who think what you are proposing is mean and nasty have no reservations to harrasing you with mean and nasty over the top comments and name calling. It's clearly obvious who the school bullies were. Many of you need to look in the mirror.

Do you not find it curious that you are the one amongst 13 pages of replies that appears to agree with the op? He asked for opinions and he got them. There's no harassing or bullying here.
