Did you notice that he died on his birthday? I found that he might have lived in Hinkley, also in San Bernadino Ca. I find researching old photographs to be an interesting side hobby. With Mr. Howland, I would probably start with census records. I agree that there should be a web site for a repository of old photographs. There is a couple now such as "DEAD FRED" Thanks for your work.

Actually, I have him born on 7 Dec 1890 from Social Security Applications and Claims Index and died on 10 Dec 1960 from the California Death Index yet Find a Grave has both dates as the 10th ... go figure. Close enough for jazz. I'll have to look at Dead Fred.
Thanks for your work as well.

Very interesting. This shows why it is important to identify photographs. I am not talking about artistic creations, but rather those photographs we keep in family albums or shoe boxes. I have seen literally thousands of photographs such as this in second hand stores, antique shops, farm auctions and other such places that lack any identification. What are some suggestions for the best way to write on the back of a photograph that you want to identify? I use a light blue ballpoint that dries rapidly. I lightly write on the back of photograph behind the darkest area of the picture. I have been doing this for decades but am willing to try something else just so that the identification stays on the back of the photograph itself. One last thought, any of us these days can find old photographs in second hand stores and other places. I wonder if a hundred years from now, will those who follow us be able to find photographic images showing us and the stories of our lives, or will these images be lost forever trapped in SD cards, hard drives, various cloud addresses. If we want our images to carry forward to the future, I'd place my money on the photo album and the shoe box.
Very interesting. This shows why it is important ... (show quote)

I post many of these on Ancestry and find a grave websites. I think we need a web site where people can post pictures like the kind you find at antique shops and auctions with any relevant information that is searchable. I'll bet many would be identified. In the mean time, I just use light pencil. Thanks for the insightful reply.

Thank you Mr. Jerl. Always nice to hear from someone who understands the fragility of family histories and how they can be lost like tears in the ocean. Edward in his electronic reincarnation might now live forever. Best Regards

Not the usual type of post ...

This is a baby picture of Edward Ryerson Howland taken in July of 1891. How do I know this?

This picture was left to me by my grandmother. It belonged to one of her husbands, Richard Ryerson, who passed away in 1941. I was able to trace Edward on my Ancestry account. He was born in Clay City, Kentucky on December 7, 1890 to Valentine Mott Howland and Elizabeth Young. Quickly after his birth, his family moved to Kochville, Saginaw, Michigan. The photos taken by Glover studio in Saginaw. It is slightly larger than a post card and mounted on cardboard. Edward had one child named Thela Valerie who only lived three years. Sadly, this was the dead end of his family line. His paternal grandparents were Amos Howland and Catherine Ryerson hence his middle name. Amos was not a Pilgrim Howland instead from another line. Catherine was the great aunt of Richard Ryerson mentioned earlier. Edward passed away on December 10, 1960 in Barstow, California. There may not be another picture of him in existence. Scanned on an Epsom V600.

Hope you found this interesting ...
