Don,
I enjoyed reading your opinions on the tamron 150-600 and seeing your photo's on your website. Do you often shoot with flash on your bird photo's ?
Your pic's have great lighting....just wondering ......Ken

Hi Ken,

I never use flash unless I just have to. Probably less than 1% are taken with flash. I love natural light.

Now that I have had mine for awhile It has found a permanent home on my Canon 7D. I carry a spare 40D and use it with my two wide angle variables for all miscellaneous images.

Mine seldom comes off my 7D, only when I'm shooting events which isn't that often.

Not a big deal. Bigmas originated with the first Sigma zoom to reach 500mm, that was the 170-500 model. Until that lens no one made a zoom that went over 400mm. Hence the "Bigma" name was born and has been associated with all the Sigma zooms that reach 500mm in focal length.
Now the Tamron "Bigron" has overtaken the hand held zoom lens wars for the time being, but Sigma has a new weapon on the horizon. It will be the 300-600mm F4 (F4.5?) Sports series. (No announced release date or price yet, but look for a $4000 plus sticker) This will be the second in their "Sports" series of Global Vision lenses, the first being the 120-300mm F2.8 Sports model, the worlds ONLY 300mm F2.8 ZOOM lens, currently carrying a $3400 sticker, and well worth every penny of it too!

That is interesting Mt Shooter. I'll have to keep an eye on that. It's a little above my budget but still might be on my horizon.

I've said it before but I'm hoping Tamron will at sometime develop a 3 or 400-800 mm lens in the same general price structure of the 150-600. I haven't heard a word about it and ne patens but I can dream.

Best of Luck with the "Bigma." It's a nice lens and you'll love it.

Sorry about that Nikon_DonB. I have been corrected and learned a new thing to boot.

The "Bigma" name has been attached to several of Sigmas zoom lenses over the last 12 years, including the 170-500mm, 150-500mm, and 50-500mm models. Both with and without OS.

I did not know that. The only one I ever heard called that was the 50-500 lens. I had the 50-500 w/out OS for my Olympus E-30. Sorry if I was mistaken.

The 50-500 the "Bigma" not the 150-500. No big thing though.

I don't know how they done it but I'm glad they did.
I know there are some people on here that love to put this lens down by saying it's soft above 500mm, etc. etc. etc. But you know what? I don't care what they say this is my all time favorite and that's after using 5 different L lens, not that the L lens were bad they just weren't as fun as the Tamron.

Check out my zenfolio page. the first three folders are with the 150-600 and probably 85% of the images are taken at 600 mm. I can't find anything soft about those shots. Some are even 600mm plus 100% crops.

Looks like it's working nicely. I enjoy my 150-600 better than any lens that I have owned.

I do to huskyrider, It's a heck of a lens at almost any price much less $1069.00. How'd they do that?

I understand your frustration, but hang in here. We need Photographers like you to help keep out the odd balls that have nothing constructive to say and feel it is their obligation to post rants instead of keeping their vile remarks to themselves. They do nothing to promote Photography.

A 16-300mm Tamron Macro zoom looks like a great lens for the price. What does anyone think of this lens? I shoot mostly landscape and wildlife.

From all I've read it's about the same on the long end as all the others of it's kind. Maybe a little sharper at other mm's. All in all a very nice lens for your wife.

Don't let the "jerks & Trolls keep you away from here or asking questions. This is a photography gear forum after all.

I happen to be on Long Island visiting relatives. I stopped in at the Sigma USA headquarters to have my 18mm to 250mm lens updated and checked out. While there I looked at the 150mm to 500mm lens. What a nice lens
Before I knew it the money just jumped out of my wallet. I don't regret the purchase. The following pictures are with the new lens. Note this was hand held since I did not have a mounting plate for the lens yet. It at 5 lbs it is a little hefty to carry around all the time. This will be my nature lens.

Congratulations on the new lens. Nice shots you posted. I guess these were the first with the lens. Nice break in shots for it to start out it's life with you.

It would be nice to live close enough to Sigma or Tamron or Canon to just pop in and have an adjustment and cleaning. It sounds like they did they do it while you waited.

I had the 50-500 for a while and it's no heavier than the 150-500 lens. Don't understand that.

Just sent mine in yesterday for the firmware update. Hope I see the same improvements that you got.

If yours was among the first batch before the firmware came out you will. It made all the difference in the world in my lens and I didn't think I had that big of a problem with it. Good luck.

Have zoom lenses gotten so good that they can be used in place of prime lenses? I see in so many threads when there is talk about lenses the focus is on zooms. Somebody is recommending this zoom or that zoom. Or someone is asking if they should buy this zoom or that zoom. What happened to primes? What happened to recommending to a beginner that they start with a 50mm?

Nothing wrong with a good prime lens Mac, especially newer the 50mm lenses or even an older MF lens. Prime lenses are a lot of folks main stay and normally sharper than a zoom with a few exceptions.

It's just that with the new technologies it has gotten harder to tell if am image was taken with a prime or a zoom lens.

As for myself, I'm disabled and can't move in and out as is required for a prime to get the best composition in an image. I call myself a birder, meaning that 90-95% of my shots are long and taken from my truck. It would be almost impossible for me to use a prime and get the variety of shots I take.
