If you get a response for Yellowstone or other public areas please post them. I have been issued a VIPER radio but I don't know how to set it for other than a few states around North Carolina. The VIPER scanners are now available and are coming down in price and no license is needed since you're not transmitting, only receiving. My understanding is that the whole country will be going onto some type of radio similar to the VIPER since our everloving government wants to sell the "extra" wavelengths made available by the whole country's EMS systems going digital. Problem is, there have been issues with the radios and sometimes that means that you're putting someone's life in danger. Part of this whole mess came about because of the radio issues on 9-11 when units inside the WTC couldn't talk to each other. In our county we spent MILLIONS of the taxpayers money to make sure we had enough towers and equipment to be able to talk to ourselves and our neighboring departments...when what we had was very adequate. Motorola has literally made a fortune because of the decisions made by our government.

Very interesting, good info and thanks! I will post any park info I find

I listen to my POLICE SCANNER 24/7 here at home to hear what's happening in my area. But can't think of why you'd want to listen to one in our National parks.

What am I missing here? Bear jambs? Bison Blockages? Ranger reports?

Plus, there is some entertainment value to be had from time to time 😉

It's nice to hear from others in the area what at be going on nearby so you can make your way over. Not always of benefit but at times it works very well. That's why I said I wanted something that could also listen to FRS as lots of people use radios in the park as cell phone coverage is lack luster at best.

A correction to my previous post. Some states do have laws governing using a mobile scanner to listen to police frequencies (although they're almost impossible to enforce), but in the interest of accuracy, here's a link on what states have such laws... http://www.zipscanners.com/resources/are-police-scanners-legal/

Thank you 😊

Wow, thanks a ton everyone!!! I found a review stating that if someone in my area has the same brand of scanner that they can actually copy their programming directly to my unit. Good head start!

I will make sure I let everyone know which way I go and why.

Jeep Daddy - I will do so.

Thanks again everyone, always so helpful, that's why I love this forum 😊😊👍🏻

Good afternoon all,

I was in Yellowstone National Park this last weekend and saw another Photog using a Scanner so he could hear radio chatter about activity in the park.

I thought that was a great idea and was wondering if there is anyone here doing the same that could help a newbie with some basic ingo.

I have done some research and have found some help would be beneficial.

Would love to ask some more specific questions, like:
1) What is a good unit to get and why? (looking at the Whistler WS1040 - Does Digital and other)
2) How do you go about programming one? (I just really want one I can run while in a park or elsewhere to hear radio chatter)

Any info is appreciated. Thanks and have an amazing day!

Great cheap solution, but I do see some issues with it, namely it doesn't always give you the type of support one may want and it can't be used anywhere else really.

The thing I like about this solution (see link below) is it can be used for many different applications (camera - window, hood of the car, tailgate, on the ground, on a rock, etc. - Could even be used as a bench rest for a rifle) and it provides much more stability for those low light situations.

I am in now way affiliated with this but I do own one and I love it.

It does cost more but I've found the cost to be worth it for me and how I use it.

Oh, and if weight is an issue... I use buckwheat hulls. Very light weight and still provides the stability needed.

Just some more food for thought!

Another vote for the Induro line. I have the very heavy aluminum version AT313 (I was worried abut height) and I hardly ever extend it beyond one leg extension (which inadvertently became a real bonus saving me time getting set up, especially with critters). I love it! Rock solid build and even the center column is very well designed with very little to any shake at all even when fully extended.

Only complaint, very heavy!

Looking at the CT313 now to save some weight as I like to hike a lot!

Oh yeah, and using a Nikon D7100 with the AF-S 80-400MM, which is overkill but I plan on getting a larger Prime lens (500mm f4).

Happy shooting and you will not be disappointed but consider the longer legs if quick set-up is key for you :-)

I have a 7100 and I am very happy with it. I would not upgrade as I do not see that much of an advantage.

I do as well, but for me the changes are well worth it as the D7100 is a dog if shooting in RAW and continuous mode. It has the better processor with an increase in noise performance, the new lightning fast and very accurate AF System and 3 times the buffer capacity which are all important if you like to shoot Wildlife and Sports.

Just something else to consider!

Yes, I think it is that much better. And I honestly think that the D7200 is that much better than the D7100 with a better autofocus system, a newer processor and higher ISO performance with a much needed upgrade to the buffer rate which is a dog on the D7100.

I like to shoot Wildlife and my kids sports so these are all very important to me.

Just another point of view to consider. Good luck!

It is a zoom lens I assume? My understanding is that it happens while zooming in and out and is somewhat unavoidable.

I have also been told that if it is not affecting your image quality then don't be too concerned with it.

I think you have to have the lens serviced by the mfg to get the dust out which I understand requires dis-assembly.

Ditto that!

I went this route and feel very satisfied with my purchase. I am now considering the Carbon version for the extra weight savings. Crazy how fast your shoulder can start to feel the weight when your chasing Big Horns, Mule Deer or Elk around the steep hills :-)

I recently went through the tripod purchase thing, and I settled for the induro At-313. I am very happy with my decision. Its a nice tall 3 section tripod. I am 6'1' and it works well for me. I am using a 7Dmkii and a tamron 150-600. Rock steady
