use shutter priority on prop planes and set it 1/125s to 1/250s to blur the prop for a better image
a lot of times I will take a single image in raw and with nx2 change the exposure +/- 1.5 and save those images to file them send to photomatix for tonemapping. Works great on images that have a lot of movement that prevents bracketing. d300 will bracket up to 1 stop 9 times. you have to program the bracketing in menu to enable the function button on the bottom right of the camera face next to the lense
Photomatix images still need editing after tone mapping. I will use curves in cs5 or nx2 and maybe tweak the noise reduction and whatever needs to be enhanced.
Just don't eliminate the detail brought out in photomatix
