Never, ever, check thru your camera equipment. I put my tripod in my suitcase or take it on board with my camera equipment. There are tripods out there that fold down quite small. The legs fold around the head. I have a camera backpack I use for travel. There are other travel cases that will fit under the seat or in the overhead bin.

The photo of the flying eagle is Terrific. I love It! It's one you should frame.
