Or a couple colorful elastic Pony Tail bands. I was going to say the girls wear but my son wore them too back in his long hair days.

Yep, who sold them glass beads. They were already making their own with shells, and stones but glass ones were cheaper.

I just received an email from Nikon announcing the pre-release order for their new Df camera. A beauty, based on the old Nikon body but digital inside. Only $2999.95 or so with 50mm lens. Good thing though is that it's compatible with these lenses: Enhanced Lens Mount
Works with all current AF-S,
AF-D and AF NIKKOR lenses,
AI (Aperture Index) and
non-AI lenses.

Drool, luckily I don't need one. I'll wait till it shows up in
SAMs Club.

I'm posting this in the Main section, knowing that it will soon be moved because I'd like it to get wider circulation before it's moved to Chit-Chat.

We've often heard people say, "Buy American," but that seems to be easier said than done. Well, here's a sure-fire way to give friends and relatives American gifts - guaranteed. I just received this as an email.
--------------------------------------

As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply-produced goods, merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor.

This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Oh, yes there is! It is time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin's on a Chinese-made flat-screen TV? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a gazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint.

Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains. This is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would love the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I know I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery, and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner-operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip.

How about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre. Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly people, do you really need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community.

If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy, or babysitter a nice big tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US - We the People - encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we could not imagine.
I'm posting this in the Main section, knowing that... (show quote)

I would buy American but even the beads the Indians use are foreign made.

Good idea but something does bother me about what you have said. Notice that your suggestions are service oriented. That is fine except that the real issue is the lack of American made goods to select from. Not talking about made elsewhere and assembled in the USA. While there are more products being made in the USA, we are a long ways from where we once were. Maybe we will never be as self dependent as we once were but we need to keep trying.

I agree. We've become a service nation now, not many American products left to buy. One may find a product that says "Assembled in the USA" but all parts are foreign. We may find an American McDonald's burger but the meat is probably counterfeit horse meat from Romania as it was here in France last year.

Even the Europeans are getting concerned. A news story last weekend followed French shoppers around and watched how they checked labels looking for French made products to buy. I had to smile as just that afternoon, my wife and I were shopping and I wanted to buy some socks. We carefully located those that were marked Made In France. In the US, I always wear Gold Toe socks but now they are sold at Sam's Club, made in China and they don't fit well.

I did find some very nice wool ones, French lamb wool, fine texture, made in France. As the other shoppers found, they were a few centimes more expensive, but excellent quality. So, I bought them, just as I would an equivalent American A to Z product if I could just find one.

I should say that I bought a Kia CE'ED here in France after comparing quality, cost, features, etc with Renault and Peugeot. Very high quality made, but not in Korea and imported. Kia wanted quality so they spent 1.1 Billion $ and built a new factory in Slovakia. My 2010 model is amongst first off the line and comes with 7 year warranty. No problems after 3 years other that door dings, and minor scrapes.

Renault and Peugeot are shutting down productions daily. VW/Audi are now being made in China too, like Cadillac as there is an upcoming market boom since the Chinese are becoming richer daily.

I'll took next week for American products when we return the USA. Wish me luck.

It goes way beyond just our borders too. Google African Black crime rates in Canada, Autralia, UK, France, Germany, et al. Hmmm. Let's see - You can't blame it on being descendants of slaves outside our borders. So one has to ask why this is so? Obviously not all are criminals or even close to the majority but when they commit several times the violent crime than other races wherever they are then to ignore that fact is cowardly and dishonest. Facts are not racist, just facts.

Town square in Vallauris, famous for decorated pottery. We visited hoping to find shops and museums offering their wares but only found this scene at the entry to the Old Town of Vallauris. Loiterers, wearing the bright gang colors, rappin', etc, and they appear un-employed as it was a work day. We started up the street behind them to visit old town and backed out as it was a black ghetto. And, this is France, not any big town in USA.
