How do I pick up the details on dark objects without overexposing the rest of the photo?

My Grandmother told me that you're supposed to wish luck for the bride and congratulate the groom. No idea why but here it is... Good luck and congratulations! I wish you many years of love, life, and laughter!

What is a good photograph? I think it's one that gets the story across that it is intended to tell, even if the photographer intended to tell people that no story is needed. That too, needs to be conveyed for the photograph to be a success.

All these "rules" that we have about focus, lighting, etc. They're just guidelines and techniques to use at will to get the story you want to tell out there.

You are right Brandy. I look at weeds in flower and see beauty. The next person sees something that needs a shot of weed killer. Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder..

Ah a person of my heart!!!!!

All are at most 1/4 of an inch....

That last one is an early purple orchid. Wild orchids tend to be much smaller than the kind you get at the nursery and if you ask me, much more stunning in their intricacies. Beautiful work!

I think I'd use a little HDR with this, but if you don't want to...picking your time might be your best bet. Bryan Peterson recommends in Understanding Exposure that you photograph the moon the day before the calendar says it is full. That way, the eastern sky and the landscape below are at nearly the same exposure value.

Also, you might have better luck if the moon is rising at the same time the sun is setting. Lots of websites have sunset and moonrise times for specific locations; choose a night where the times are close (within 15-20 minutes).
I think I'd use a little HDR with this, but if you... (show quote)

Do you have a link for one of those websites?

Nope, that's not a photo of me, thanks for asking though :) That thing is the fruit of the sweet gum tree. Makes you think twice about sweet gum balls doesn't it? I'm not in Norman, I'm in Muskogee and attend the Tahlequah campus.

Thanks for the welcomes!

Hi, I'm Kate. I've been hanging out in the closet and watching and piping in ever so often so I thought I'd make it official and say "I'm here!" You can all run screaming now if you want. hahaha

I'm an older student of photography at NSU in Oklahoma.

In Photoshop Elements 9, I started with a crop to move the gold into the lower third of the photo, the lens cap is just a background so I wasn't worried about what I saved of it.

I then adjusted the darkness and contrast. Following that, I overlaid a new layer and adjusted the opacity of it. I finished with a merge and this is what I ended up with.
