Welcome to the Hog.....love your pics.

Hey- I just checked out your website- nice shots! I especially like the NY Harbor pics. My Dad was, and my brother is, a Harbor Pilot. I'm retired USCG and sailed into NY more than once. Loved going under the Verrazano.

Missy, welcome to the hog. I will concur, some of us are, some of us were, and some of us will still be overwhelmed by digital, but, we are all getting used to it, and I know you will eventually will also. So, keep plugging, ask questions and post like you did...You will be fine.
Rich

Thanks for the empathy LOL I just love the fact that I can edit & delete 100s I shoot in only a few minutes. I'm trying to find an Adult Ed class in Digital and/or PS.

Welcome to the forum Missy, I am sure you will learn a lot here, I am only 20 minutes from the Harley Factory in York , been diving in the underground springs just north of you. Enjoyed your photos especially like the action in the last shot.

Thank you! Do you ride? Which spring did you dive- Devil's Den? Do you shoot underwater?

Welcome USCG Missy!! I see you are a horse lover. We have one or two, maybe three in the forum so you are going to fit right. Your shots don't show that you have lost anything.

They are great

Welcome again, post some more.

Thank you TRamsey! I'm lucky to not only have a horse of my own, but I live in an area with lots of horses. I also love to shoot people with their dogs- just difficult to catch the bond between them. I'll keep shooting!

So if I'm interested in editing my photo's and don't have a program yet, would you recommend my buying the Elements at Sam's? I'm fairly computer literate.
Thanks

If you're a sams club member you can buy Elements 11 until May 28 at this price. Add 10% if you're not.

I'm new at this- is PS Elements the same as plain ol' PhotoShop? Or is it an add-on or something? Thanks. Please forgive the stupid question...

You need a greater depth of field - to do that use an aperture of f/8 or smaller. You can get a depth of field calculator for your smart phone and learn how to adjust your aperture depending on the focal length of the lens, and the distance to subject. It also varies by the camera's sensor size. I use F-Stop app (free) on my iPhone and it allows you to key in your specific camera.
For example, I set it for your 7D with 200mm lens at 20ft from the bird, and an aperture of f/5.6 only gives you sharpness of 4"" in front and behind your focal point. At f/8 the sharpness increases to 5.4" in front & behind. And at f/16 it is 10" in front and 11" behind. Increase the distance to the subject also increases the depth of field but then the subject is smaller. Lots to consider. In general, for photographing birds you'll need a much longer telephoto lens. I use the Sigma 150-500mm and sometimes that's not enough.
Get the phone app and play with it.

That was some info I needed too. Am downloading that app right now. Thanks!
