I think as long as image manipulation is used to enhance and not deceive it's perfectly alright. When I was using Kodachrome if the photo was too warm or cool I did a little color correcting. After all film "sees" differently than the human eye and the image you are looking at may not be an accurate representation of what you really saw. Therefore a color correction may be considered to give a more accurate picture of how the image actually appeared to the photographer.
