speters,
Thanks for your help. As usual, too many choices, too little funds. But I am concerned about the gray market. Are those cameras identifiable?

Linda,
Thank you very much. I am a little less confused now except that I have added a Canon SL3 to my short list.

Sorry for the misspelling there, I'm usually not that bad.
Just a quick question. I am interested in a new Canon T7i and I notice that some that are for sale (ebay mostly) are sold as 800D/T7i and the camera in labeled 800D. But new ones are usually labeled just T7i. Is there a difference and should I care?
Thanks,
Jerry
Thanks for all that info. Maybe I should wait a while to scrounge up some more money.

Thanks to all who helped, olemikey, gvarner, Gkarl, Orson Burleigh, jdub82, DeanS, Thumper26, maxlieberman, Dick Ranez, uhass2009, Hammond. That was exactly the kind of help and suggestions I was looking for. I have always been leery of refurbished equipment, refurbished by who?, or used stuff, but I am convinced I should look into it. I am not looking to be a pro, but I do want to be a better than average amateur. Thanks. (Sorry, I missed a lot of names there by not looking back a page at the time. Thanks to all).
New here again after a long layoff. Sorry if this has been asked dozens of times but I want to buy a new camera. Price range is only about $500 or $600 at the moment. Want a DSLR, probably Canon T5, 6, or 7 or Nikon 3500. Any thoughts please? Also I see plenty of "kits" being sold with these two cameras, are they worth it?

I guess this whole discussion sounds goofy to photographers who are not car guys. There is no question, though, that Bruce is correct. Been around Chevy engines longer than I care to admit. I've had a bunch of new Chevies, Pontiacs and GMC pickups, all with Chevy small blocks.
