You can use single point focus and move that point where ever you want it, if the object you want to focus on isn't in the center of the frame. On your D7000 use the round control by the "OK" button, and watch in the viewfinder, toggle it to where you want. In your first photo it appears to be focusing on the rocks in the background in the center of the photo.

Oops thats not good I don't want a focused rock and an unfocused person - it kept going blury it was hard to see what was in focus but now I know why - thanks so much for your help...

I'm so glad the problem is solved. Todays cameras and lenses are complicated and it is easy to miss a detail when setting things up. Often a book on the camera is far better than the manufacturer's manual. I like David Busch as an author myself, just a style preference- he writes in a way I easily understand and gives set up examples.

I am going to try David Busch - thanks for that recommendation..

I went out yesterday to see what conditions were like and came across some interesting situations in some very flooded areas.

We've had an unusually heavy monsoon this year and my heart went out to these poor birds who are braving this weather. Even ducks looked miserable.

wonderful photos all of them .. I love the first fella.. he is gorgeous..

In photo 1 and 2 I noticed that the back of someones head looked to be in focus. Try using single point auto focus or manual focus. If you have all the focus points turned on the camera will pick whatever is closer such as the back of someones head in the audience that is closer.

Brilliant thank you - I have just done that and it works so much better - thanks a lot...

I think they are lovely photos, you should just listen to yourself - which is what you did by the sound of it .. .... so pleased you sold them.. I think its a great idea to make cards for the local people.. don't listen to negativity it just spreads more negativity....

My sister and I were on a long bike ride this weekend. We are about 15 miles from home, when two little kittens come running toward us. There is only one house for miles and most of the land around is state land. I suspect they have been dumped and after checking at the farm house our suspicions are confirmed. I now have two new barn kitties, that were not thrilled with biking. My husband said to let the grandkids name them. This is what you get when you let three year olds name things. I just hope Flatty doesn't live up to his name. I am not sure that is such a great name for a cat.

IF this is a top line lens you can do this with it all day long arms in at your sides braced you should be able to shoot these all day long. I shot thing with my 100-400mm and get some pretty good close-ups. You did well know matter what and if you don't have a close-up lens step back and use the longer lens even if you have to rock back and forth for the focus.
Good luck keep shooting and have fun.

Great advice.. thanks..

Ditto this. Why rely on the camera to choose the point at which to focus. You should always focus on a persons face or if you are close enough their eye(s).

Thank you ... I will now do all these things above and hopefully next time be successful..
