Check your exposure bias.....its very easy to set it to a + or - and not change it back when you change modes. What it does is bias the meter so when you set the meter to zero in manual mode you will be either over or under exposed.

Larry

Thank you Larry not sure when I changed that setting but now that I know it is there and that I need to check it to make sure it is set where I want it I will be checking it more often

One other point to think about - not mentioned above:

Image one (Auto version) ISO 1250
Manual versions ISO 200

Thank you Searcher I think we got it fixed thanks to Nikonian's help..

Your camera is set to +5 EV, which is 5-stops over-exposure. It should be set to "0" (normal exposure).
that makes sense. Thank you so much I was scared I had broke my camera or something.
I really do appreciate your help.
and no sweat off my back some people just cant help themselves his comment just got under my skin for a second I shouldn't of even commented but after the day I have had I couldn't hold back. I will never stop asking for help when I don't understand how else would I learn if I did.

You can access EV biasing through camera menu. Or you can press & hold both green buttons, which will return camera to manufacturer's original settings.
Thank you Nikonian72 I found where to set the EV. is there a setting it should be set? do you have a recommendation on this setting I am not sure how it got changed and like I said am fairly new at this so that setting is not one I have played around with.
