This is beyond an astonishing story which is not only beyond belief but is definitely up there with one of the most amazing moments I've ever had with the hundreds of animals I've had the pleasure in helping🦔💜
So yesterday ( sunday )
I got a call from a gentleman David that said his dog had found a hedgehog in his compost heap yesterday ( saturday afternoon)
Thinking he was helping the hedgehog he caught her and took her a mile away and released her on a river bank 😪
( please no negative comments this was not done with any kind of selfishness at all just lack of education on hogs)
Sunday morning the David found 6 tiny hoglets in the compost heap , all with thier eyes closed.
Knowing straight away then that he had naively separated a family , he headed straight back down to the river bank to try and find mum , but with 24 hours gone by she wasnt there😪🦔
I expressed my concerns for mum, and explained to David that hogs are territorial and map out the area they live in , they know where all the food and water sources are , hence y if you feed and water hogs you should continue this all year round as they depend in it .
So mum was now in the middle of nowhere a mile away from her nest and babies, full of milk , no food, water , or even the saftly of her nest and was left incredibly vulnerable x
But sadly she was nowhere to be seen, the damage had been done and the priority then was the very hungry 6 hoglets left behind 🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔🦔
I said to David I'd take the hoglets, he doesnt drive so got a taxi here straight away , he left a kind donation for thier care,
the babies other than a few fleas and hungry were fine.
They were put straight in the incubator and was snuggled up in a snuggly 💜
After spending the night here with me and being fed throughout the night , David called me this morning..............
Mummy hedgehog had spent the last 48 hours finding her way home to her babies😯😯😯
She was back in David's garden in the nest looking for her babies 😯
At this point I found this incredibly unbelievable and honestly never heard of anything like it , I thought at first it's got to have just been another hog in David's garden
David brought her straight down to me , via taxi again x
Now this is where big decisions had to be made , hog was curled up in a very tight ball so I couldn't even tell if this hog was mum or infact even a female hedgehog at all,
But something...... a huge niggling feeling was telling me this was mum and the 6 babies I'd been nursing were hers 🦔
With alot of thought how was best to try as see if she would reunite with her young, and the reality of what would happen if these were not her babies and she turned on them
I decided to try
Now this is not the done thing and I would not reccomend this to anyone else, I just knew it was her and hoped with the determination she had shown travelling over a mile to get back to her babies it was worth the risk for all of them to try 🦔
Hedgehogs do not adopt other hogs hoglets ,and if thier young are disturbed or touched with human scent they are more than likely to abandon them or attack and eat them
So this was an incredibly risky gut feeling I'd got
The babies had been handled by David, them myself, they had been fed for 20 hours with me
The likeiness of her taking them back , not only with alien scents all over them but in a strange place, with no nest was just a beyond crazy idea, and that was if we were correct and this was mum at all 😯
But I decided I'd try
I put the snuggly with the babies in next to mum , they instantly wriggled to her and started squeaking at her for food.
She crunched up in a ball huffing and puffing at them , I was ready to rescue them if this went horribly wrong 🦔
I sat and watched for over an hour in which time she had uncurled, and started sniffing them , she started circling them and started making a nest with the hay I'd provided
After watching her for an hour although she was huffing and puffing a bit, I just knew they were her babies and she wouldn't hurt them💜💜
Her behaviour was obvious, she was puffing at them as they smelt strange and it's almost like she knew they were hers but was not happy enough to let them suckle in this strange place ,
So I put extra hay in , covered the cage up and left her to relax, at this point I was absolutely as sure as I could be she wouldn't hurt them , and they were hers 💜🦔
My gut feeling was right , and the decision I made has brought a very brave , intelligent, determined mother reunited with her babies 💜💜
This video was just 3 hours after reuniting them x
My heart just skipped a beat when I popped my head in to see this very emotional picture xx
6 hoglots reunited with mummy , mum contently laid flat out in her new nest she had just made and all 6 hoglets contently suckling xx
I still cannot believe it 💜💜
It's just beyond unreal
And people say animals dont feel emotions, pain, fear , determination, and love.......
This mother hedgehog is just one incredible animal , travelling over a mile to find her way bk to her family , and against all odds excepted them back x
I think that pretty much proves that they feel every bit of emotions like we do 🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜🦔💜

What? I don’t want a vegetarian pizza!

How the hell do you know that?
