Have just gotten back into photography over the last year or two. I had an Olympus E-PL1 and was really happy with the results I got, especially the colors it produced. Feature-wise, the E-PL1 was lacking though, so I decided to get a DSLR. A friend of mine suggested I go with Nikon. I liked how his D90 "felt", so I sold my Olympus and got a Nikon D3000.

I'm really happy with the features and ergonomics of my D3000, but am disappointed in the results I'm getting, especially the colors in my pics. I'm only shooting in RAW. So far I've got the D3000 and kit lens, which I bought used. I also have a SB-400 flash and a 35mm lens which I bought new. I'm considering upgrading a D3200 or D5100 this summer, but am worried I won't be happy with another Nikon.

Before I get any deeper into Nikon, I'm considering switching to Olympus- but their DSLR's seem to all be relatively old compared to other manufacturers. Can anyone tell me what's up with that? All their new stuff is compact, mirrorless. Mirrorless would be fine, but I want a good viewfinder with a built in flash, and a hot shoe- without giving up any of the features you get in a DSLR.

Can anyone knowledgeable about Olympus and/or Nikon make any suggestions or recommendations? I find I'm taking a lot less pictures lately since I'm not getting the results I want.

I'm also open to other brands, except Canon- I don't really like how they feel.

I have an excellent condition Canon Eos Elan film camera with a 28-80mm wide angle lens and a 75-300 Zoom lens. I'll sell all the equipment for $350.00 If you're interested I'll take pictures of the equipment and email them to you. I'm looking to upgrade to a decent digital camera. :)

you can use the lenses if you stay with cannon

The past few days have been sunny, but I was stuck here doing work around the house. Now that I have some free time, it's cloudy with rain on and off, with the same forecast through the weekend.

I want to get out and take some pictures, but I need your ideas. What's good shooting on a rainy day?

go see bryan peterson @adorama TV has some great ideas for shooting in doors, the pizzia idea, has one on shooting a screen with a colorful background with water, just to name a few, could also try smoke or water drops.

pro = full frame (fx) crop sensor = amature (dx=Nikon ef-s=canon) find any camera over $2,000 using FF and you have found a pro style camera.

I tried to make the title descriptive. I want to take better pictures of flowers and I know a tripod is the best for getting sharp photos. Is there anything else I could use when I travel? Last year, in Epcot, I took many photos of flowers but had a hard time with movement (mostly mone).

I don't want to carry a tripod bec of the bulk & packing it for plane. I know there are a couple of monopods with feet that extend but they don't seem very stable for a dslr. I also heard about the string pod, but I can't see how that will help all that much.

Any other ideas?

cnet has an article on a shoe string tripod/monopod, google shoestring or string tripod. Basic it is a 1/4" x 20 eye bolt with a string or you can use a 1/4"x20 and a large washer, low in cost and pocketable.

Regarding re-using lenses you need to take care!
EF-S lenses are designed for the cropped CMOS sensors (such as found on the 60D, 7D etc) & will only work with this type of camera. They are not compatible with full frame sensor cameras.
EF lenses will work with both these camera types and full frame sensor cameras such as the 5D.

Hope this helps - & excuse any differences in camera model types between US & UK!

How can I tell whether a lense is EF-S or EF?

Mentioned that I purchased a Cannon T2i today for Best Buy had a great sale with any lens half off and it came with 18-55 and I bought the zoom 55-250.
Does anyone have the T2i and do you like it, have 14 to days to return. They said that the 2 is newer than the 3 ??? I am a real novice when it come to these, have been using point n shoots for years and have had great photos with them, but I have a drawer full that quit after a year, less than a year or a little more, but some of them get great photos....What is my main reason for putting this money down for one of these, can anyone tell me ???

My ex girlfriend got one for her Canon 60D and now she can't get the batteries out of it. They are stuck because the latch broke off. This probably wouldn't happen with OEM products. Well worth the money to get the real McCoy. I know, you'll hear a lot of people that have had success with 3rd party products. In the end, it's up to you and your piece of mind. I bought some off brand batteries, and 2 out of 4 only lasted a few charges and now they won't even take a charge. I learned my lesson and it's OEM all the way now.

I disagree in your statement abt OEM product latches cant fail they can and do. Not saying yours wont fail or will but dont make such a broad statement that they cant fail...

I saw a canon camera grip for 269.00, then I saw a camera grip with no name for 69.00, how good are the unknown brands? Is it worth buying them, anybody has any experience with any of them? Thank you..

just purchased a Vello battery grip for my 40D for $64.95 @bh also has video, fit and finish quality is very good and Highly recomended by me for a non-canon product, also purchased the vello shutter boss for $52.50 my only complaint is there is no off switch so I just remove the batteries after I done BH also has video on this product.

I'm looking for suggestions for a new camera . I have it kinda narrowed down to nikon coolpix 510 or a canon sx 40 . I'm an old 35mm guy, and want a little more than the typical pocket sized point and shoot. i'm not to the stage where i would use a dslr e
fectively and several lenses would be hard to afford .

same here I have a fear of hights but it doesnt bother me in an airplane (large), just glass outside or inside elevators going up at least 4 or more floors and standing at an overlook and look down eeek. Went to a tower lookout and had to move slowly to the edge and look down, then moved back to the wall. Never been in a small plane so good luck to you.

What does anyone think of the Tamron 70-200 f2.8? It's even cheaper than the sigma, and I have had success with tamron in the past. Does anyone have any testimonials with this lens? It seems to be a forgotten lens in the 'field' of sports photography, pardon the pun...

have only tested both Canon and Tamron at the camera store found it a bit noisy (Tamron) even for me also the Tamron doesn't have IS which for me I like it handholding, focus was good but not as fast as the Canon 70-200 f2.8 L II IS USM but were talking about a $750 for Tamron with a $2500 Canon L lens. I just picked up the Tamron 70-300 with vc and love it gave up older Tamron 70-300 in trade.
