I only have anecdotal information about the 6D/D610 for fast action. The D610 has the advantage of more focus points and cross-type focus points to track with.

Ill check into it...

Ill have to go play with one... I've only recently peeked an interest in a new camera body after having to deal with increasing hot pixels in my d90... Really do enjoy it though.. Just having to avoid dark pics..... Did play with a 6d at the store .. Seamed to do well in the low light.. The nikon comparable better for fast action?

What are the weaknesses of the 6d.. I'm looking to upgrade.. I currently have the nikon d90 but was looking at canon since I'm not heavenly invested in nikon lenses.. I mostly photograph my kids.. Portraits and tball games.. And advice to steer me the right direction for a new body.. Did you get the 6d yet? Enjoying it?

We would all go with the 80-300mm f/2.8, except it does not exist. :-(

The only zoom with a fixed f/2.8 maximum aperture and 300mm is the Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 DG OS, which is "only" $3600.

I think I mis-typed..:( I meant the 80-200 2.8

love reading your advice.. :))i guess i was hoping to get a 80-200 because of the 2.8.... my little 50 mm that stops down to 1.8 has spoid me ...:(..... Ethans games are in the evening so i havent been able to capture any thing amazing ... ( and im trying to hold myself back from running out on the feild with my 50 mm..lol..)was hoping the 2.8 would help... i could lean on stuff to steady my hand... I guess i could get the 70-200 thats doesnt stop down that far?...quote=gessman]Let me take a second of your time and unconfuse anything I said in that last post that might have been confusing. I re-read that and decided that I might very well be a drinking man after all. What I want to say is simple - VR can, in some low light situations, effectively provide you with up to 4 stops more light advantage in near dark situations. You can use that as an advantage in setting your iso/aperture/shutter speed combination to enhance your images in low light situations. It can mean the difference between hanging over the fence shooting low light action or sitting in the bleachers and watching the game. If you have perfect light conditions then you can get by without it by keeping your shutter speed above your focal distance but I will promise you that you cannot always do that and when you cannot, you will be shooting blurry pictures either from camera or subject movement. VR is definitely worth the money unless you know you will always be shooting action in bright light - guaranteed! f/2.8 in a zoom is also worth the money, inconvenient but worth it.

I would recommend that you ignore those who are saying you don't need VR if you set your shutter speed high enough because there'll likely be times when you cannot do that. They're talking about the hours of bright daylight and you will find that you will be wanting to shoot when you don't have that.[/quote]

I saw all the lenses you listed in the "closed listings" except the 80-300 in f2.8, for WELL UNDER your stated budget. I saw a lot of the lenses listed and from people with numerous excellent feedback in the $400 range.

Somtimes (and not talking about you) I am amazed at people's reluctance to use eBay or consider it a reasonable resource, when you look at the actual listings.

Many of the listings on eBay are sold by the very resellers everyone on these forums tell you to go to instead.

Closed group?!!!!
Yes, some people have had negative experiences (a small number) on eBay, just as a few people have had negative experiences with the noted resellers.

Approached cautiously, as I would hope anyone would do, eBay can be just as safe as any online or brick/mortar transaction.

I've saved untold hundreds and thousands of dollars using eBay over fifteen years, because I also buy there. Just watch the sellers closely. There is more information to guide you to good sellers than any other sales venue you can find.

Sorry for the preach, and I don't know how you feel about eBay, but it will do your first request on this thread... be a real value resource.

Check out the 80-200 f2.8, they had many versions made; last I looked Adorama had one that was an AF-S 80-200 F2.8. I was also in the same delima but I shot low light so needed a fast zoom; I ended up with the 70-200 f2.8 VR for about $1,300. You can also look at Sigma and Tamron for those fast zooms....thanks GP

Thank you..:)

I'm not familiar with a Nikon 80-300 f2.8 but the 70-300mm f4.5 is a fine lens if however you're shooting in low light conditions the 70-200mm f2.8 will be the best choice. What are you shooting? Outdoors? Indoors?

Outdoors.. Some time ball game run late... I. Photograph my kids mostly... I really love the ease of separating your subject from the background with the fast lens... I only own one fast-ish lens, nikon 50mm 1.8 ... So I thought I could afford one of these lens if I sacrificed the vr?!?

Try B+H Camera/Video or Adorama. You might look at used or refurbished lenses. I have the Nikon 70-300 with VR, not as fast, but works well with my d5100. Happy shopping.

Thank you..:)
